Editorial Reviews

Review

"There is a Nesbit quality about Miss Sleigh's writing as there is in her manipulation of magic. . . .her books are always well worth waiting for." --Junior Bookshelf

"Barbara Sleigh laces adventure with humor and has a casually expert way of twisting everyday settings and events into something bizarre and wholly entertaining," --Margery Fisher, Growing Point

Praise for Carbonel: The King of the Cats and The Kingdom of Carbonel

"A delightfully amusing story." -Parents Magazine

"It's a highly diverting fantasy, told exactly as though it all could happen." -Chicago Tribune

"We do like good fantasy, and it is hard to find. Here is some magic sturdily rooted in everyday happenings with both the real children and their enchanted acquaintances well characterized and sharing in some very convincing experiences." -New York Herald Tribune

"A truly bewitching story reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland." -New York Journal American

"A highly entertaining fantasy." -San Francisco Chronicle

"Magic and everyday life blend smoothly in this highly enjoyable fantasy, perfect for reading aloud." -Terri Schmitz, Horn Book

"A delightful story for those who like impossible things to happen in a humdrum world...The children are lively, the grown-ups (including the witch) colorful and the mingling of magic and reality is most effective." -The New York Times

"The magic is potent in The Kingdom of Carbonel...The children have some very worthwhile experiences including trips in an airborne rocking chair (very bumpy), an accident with an invisibility spell and the challenge of Mrs. Cantrip's Miniscule Magic powder." -The New York Times

Calidor rejects his life as a royal prince and joins an apprentice witch for adventure. His father Carbonel disappears while enlisting the aid of Rosemary and John to convince Calidor to return. The young teenagers restore Calibor's sense of duty and Carbonel's freedom in time for them to lead the charge against their familiar rivals.
The story lines are not as robust, with fewer challenges, fewer characters and less magical whimsy. Rosemary and John seem more prone to conflict and conversation than before. Be prepared for more references to dated aspects of English life.
Calidor and Carbonel is certainly worth reading if you can find a copy. But two earlier Carbonel books are worth more effort.

The Carbonel Trilogy is ones of my all-time favorites. They're like comfort food; you never outgrow them.

Carbonel and Calidor is a fitting climax for the trilogy. With witches' brooms, an enchanted rocking chair, assorted spells, witches' hats, war between the cat kingdoms, and even a bit of romance, what more could you want?

Rosemary and John are back, as well as Mrs. Cantrip, her assistant, and a new witch, just to keep things lively.

The ending ties up all the loose ends, leaving the reader with a thirst for more.

While I read (and fell in love with) the first two Carbonel books as a little girl in the 1960s, I never knew this one existed until 2013. Glad to add it to the collection. I really think these books had a heavy influence on the Harry Potter series, whether this is acknowledged or unacknowledged.

This is a lovely continuance of the chronicles of Carbonel and his humans. Maybe not quite as magical as the first two in the grouping, though.
