I purchased this set of double points (as well as some circulars and straights from the same company) not long after I started knitting. I've read a number of reviews glowing about how wonderful the needles are and that they are comparable to Clover needles. There is really not much of a comparison as the Clover needles are by far a higher quality than these. These needles are not nearly as smooth as other bamboo needles - these needles seem to be more porous - it seems like they need additional sanding or some wax to smooth them out. It is sometimes difficult to get the yarn to slide off the needles, even though I tend to be a loose knitter. The smaller size needles (3 and below) are very flimsy, so I wouldn't recommend using these for sock knitting. Some of the needles I've used have gotten splintery which causes the yarn to catch on the needle.
On the positive side, if you typically just need double point needles for small projects such as decreases on hats, or just getting the center started on a circular piece of knitting such as a pi shawl, then these might be a good purchase for you. These may also be good for knitters that worry about dropping a needle or stitches with slippery DPNS. You can't beat the price - which is the main reason I'm giving it 3 stars - any more expensive and I'd be giving them a 2. PS: I think that there is someone out there (most likely from the manufacturer or distributor) who has been noting negative reviews for these products as "unhelpful".

I am extremely pleased with my 7" double pointed bamboo knitting needles. They are very smooth and have good points at a very affordable price. I finished off the top of a hat with a set of these needles (#4) and could not tell the difference between the Oriental Touch needles and my usual Clover needles. I believe the point on Clover needles are more tapered and a bit sharper but I sure didn't notice much difference when I used them.
------------ Additional comments: I have since done some knitting with the #8 and #2 needles. The points of the #8 needles varied from needle to needle. They are nicely tapered and easy to use but some needles had sharper points than others. The Oriental Touch needles just don't feel quite as firm as the Clovers. They have a little bit of flex which does not bother me at all with the sizes above #3. I can really notice the difference in firmness in sizes #1 and #2 when I compare them to my set of Clover #2 5" needles which just feel firmer. I started a sock on the Oriental Touch #2 needles and they are working just fine. The flexibility of the needles is a bit annoying and I have the nagging feeling that one of will eventually snap through some sort of a mishap. The #1 and #2 needles are the only needles that made miss using Clovers, the difference is not as noticeable in the larger sizes. ------------ This is a great way to get a full set of double pointed needles. I love having them since it is hard to find any double pointed needles in my immediate area. It is a great to be able to start projects and know I have the double points that I need. This set will probably pay for itself in a few months. The Oriental Touch service is fabulous. The needles were shipped from the West Coast to the East Coast. I ordered them early on a Monday and the needles arrived by mail on Wednesday. The needle packaging was very basic but they were ship quickly and the needles arrived in fine shape.

Good value for the price!,

For the price, this is a fantastic set of DPNs. They do have some minor issues -- I think that the points could be a bit sharper, and mine do bend quite easily. However, I've completed a couple of projects on mine, and they've turned out just fine. I'd highly recommend these for the casual knitter who doesn't want to spend a ton of money on needles they're not going to use all the time.
The seller also shipped the needles quickly and with good packaging. I would buy from them again.

Happy knitter,

I received my needles today (ordered on the 20th, shipped on the 22nd) and I am very happy with my purchase! Great value for the price considering they're bamboo (compare prices to Clover). I always wanted to buy DPNs but end up thinking twice because of the prices -- good thing I checked here and am very satisfied. Will buy from this company again if (and when) they come out with other products as affordable as this. =)

No substitute for Takumi,

I needed a lot of DPNs and couldn't afford to top off my small Takumi collection. I was surprised at how many sizes of DPNs were included - I now nearly have a complete set! But they are no substitute for Takumis. The ends are very sharp, so these needles would not be suitable for children. The needles are not *that* smooth, but if you are used to using DPNs, the needles should be fairly easy to adjust to.
All in all, the value is great for the number of sets you get. The quality is so-so but not terrible.

Bamboo DPNs,

I am very unhappy with the needles I received. They are in no way "smooth." Granted I have only used the size 1 and 2 so far for socks. However, I am having to knit so loosely to be able to slid the yarn across the needles that I fear my socks are going to be too big. Also one of the needle points appears to have a split in it because it keeps getting caught on the yarn. I wouldn't recommend these to anyone. I do have to agree that they are good for the price. But it is also true that you get what you pay for.

Too Much Friction/Poor Quality,

Hmmm, One of the #8 needles in this set splintered as soon as I tried to use it! Otherwise, these needles are very poorly finished, they catch on yarns and split them, also the points are too large to be easily slipped into yarn loops. I think these needles might be helpful for beginners who are afraid of dropping stitches, the rough texture makes this almost impossible. Anyone who is accustomed to speed and fluid motions will find their arms aching from these needles. I'm returning these and investing in metal needles.

These needles are a wonderful value when compared to what you would pay for individual sets of one size. Fast shipping and nice quality bamboo dpns.

Good Value,
This review is from: Carbonized Patina 7" Double Point Bamboo Knitting Needles 14 Sizes (70 Pieces) (Kitchen)
I got these needles months ago as a gift from my mother. She got them on sale. I've done a couple of pairs of socks, finished off a hat, and used them as a cable needle for a scarf. They were the first DPNs I used. The only other kind of DPNs I've used since are metal.
Wood Quality: I only *just* bought a set of Takumi needles so I haven't knit with them yet but M. Fugami is right. Takumi needles are smoother than the Oriental Touch needles. I like that my stitches don't just slide off of these needles but if you knit tightly or need to knit tightly for a project it could slow you down. I ended up staining the size three needles when I knit some black yarn with it. Be careful to keep it from anything that has a color/ink that will rub off on things. Points: The points of the smaller needles are sharper than the points of the larger ones. I think that's why some reviews say they're too blunt and others say they're too sharp. You'll want to use point protectors on the sharper ones. Overall: I've been happy with them and they suit how I knit.

knitting for everyone! Keep your receipt!,

These are a great way to get a bunch of needles for your knitting needs without breaking the bank, a way to get knitting to the masses!
I will say, they are not as smooth as other bamboos I've used, they have a bit more resistance. I did have a needle splinter as well, which was annoying halfway through my project, as it snagged the yarn. But I contacted the company (I tried to reach them through Amazon, they didn't get the message, I had saved the receipt and their e-mail is on that, and they responded immediately) and they priority mailed me a new set of the size right away. So make sure you save your receipt! |
