5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners!
This card making book is great for beginner's! It shows you how to create balance designs in a very, very basic way using simple shape patterns ... it then offers you colorful photo illustrations of the same shape patterns used to create beautiful cards from scrapbooking papers, embellishments, etc. This book will show you how to create balanced and beautiful cards...

3.0 out of 5 stars It's OK
As a graphic designer, I like the outlines for the card layouts. They are asthetically pleasing, and could inspire you to design a multitude of two-dimensional art pieces such as cards, scrapbook pages, ads, wall displays, etc. However, many of the examples given are over done! In addition, they use store bought embellishments, so they are not very original.

... and I'm a relatively experienced card maker.

Think of it as a set of "blueprints" for cards. Just as with architect blueprints for a house, you'll get diagrams showing proportion and placement of different elements that make up the card. You won't get detailed directions on making specific cards, although there are dozens of examples in the book, just as a book of house blueprints usually contains some illustrations showing examples of how the house will look if constructed in various colors, etc.

You WILL, however, get a ton of "patterns" that you can use to construct your own cards, with some assurance that the end result will be balanced and visually pleasing. Colors, trims, embellishments, etc. are entirely up to you.

This is the first book I turn to when I need to make a card for a specific occasion. I always find a pattern than "jumps out" at me, and from there, it's easy to put together a great card.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Anyone who Loves Making Cards, June 21, 2008
This review is from: CardMaker's Sketch Book: Ideas to Inspire Creative Card Designs (Paperback)
I love this book! What's great about it:

It has 40+ sketches for different card designs and then 4 or 5 examples of completed cards

You can use the sketches over and over again

Everytime I look at the book I notice a patterned paper or embellishment that has been used on one of the completed examples in a way that has never occured to me before.

5.0 out of 5 stars Card Making with Sketches to Help you Plan, July 8, 2009
This review is from: CardMaker's Sketch Book: Ideas to Inspire Creative Card Designs (Paperback)
I have lots of card making books that I buy online but most of the time after I get them, I find that they are not really the kind of card making book which I would like to own. I don't live close to a bookstore to browse the books in person so I would be taking a risk each time I place an order online.

To my surprise, when I got this book, I was quite happy with what I saw. The sketches give me an idea on how to start off with a card design. The pictures of different cards are there to show you how it would look like when you use a particular sketch.

Very helpful when I am feeling dry and need a boost on inspiration. I love the quality of the cards that Tanya Fox makes ... it's the clean crisp look of the cards which inspires me. They look "professionally made" - like store-bought cards.

Now I am looking around for her other books to see if I have missed out on those that I am not aware of. Love this book and glad that I bought it.

I also bought the CardMaker's Sketch Book: Birthday Celebration which is by various authors. It's very similar to this book (different sketches with different cards). I would give that book a 5-star too. The publishers should have more of these books printed.

This book is spectacular. It provides easy to read and understand strategies to create creative cards. I particularly liked the pictures of the different approaches for each sample. It let you know you can create more than one type of card from one simple template. I found the templates for the envelopes confusing but still need to play with them to see if I understand how to set up the size, etc. Definitely worth the purchase if you enjoy a quick yet creative approach to making cards.

Love this book! Each card is sketched out, with two or three beautiful finished cards provided - creating additional ideas for my own cards. How easy is that? And what fun I have had using the various sketches throughout the book. This book provides me with many more new options for creativity. I highly recommend this book.
