This book is not what it should be. Believe me, I LOVE Cardcaptor Sakura, but what Mixx has done to this masterpeice should not be allowed.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best shoujo manga and best CLAMP work I've read, June 11, 2000

CLAMP has outdone themselves again. An ordinary girl named Sakura accidentally comes upon a magical book with missing cards. Without the book to hold the cards in, the cards become alive and wreck havoc on the world. It becomes Sakura's responsibility to capture those cards strategically. When she captures a card, she gains the ability to control that card. For example, capturing the Wind card allows her to control winds, and so forth. There are plenty of twists and side stories as well.

CLAMP's artwork far surprasses all the other shoujo manga (Sailor Moon, Fushigi Yuugi, etc.)... in fact, their uniqueness and usage of detail make them my favorite manga artist overall. Card Captor Sakura is stellar, and unlike other shoujo mangas, Sakura doesn't wear the same boring uniform every day, which was a big plus for me. Eye candy aside, the story itself is excellently written and engrossing.

If you are familiar with Magic Knight Rayearth or X/1999--the other two CLAMP works that are more well known here in the USA--I believe that Card Captor Sakura is better than either. Magic Knight Rayearth, at least the manga, was simply too short and much too rushed. On the other hand, X/1999 is much too drawn-out and confusing and shallow (due to the fact that fighting and gore scenes take up the vast majority of the manga's content). Card Captor Sakura has just the right combination of romance, action, humor, plot, pace, and mystery.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clamp has really out done themselves this time., April 10, 2000
This review is from: Cardcaptor Sakura 1 (Paperback)
Clamp is known for it's beautiful artwork and Card Captor Sakura is far from an exception. The story centers around a little girl named Sakura who happens upon a magic book next to a small sleeping mouse-like creature with wings. She opens the book and 20 cards escape from it. When the mouse creature awakes she discovers that the book is the book of Clow (pronounced like cow not glow) and the cards (clow cards) were trapped inside of it. Since it was she who released them it is now Sakura's job to capture them, hence the name. She goes off and with the help of the mouse creature (I can't for the life of me recall his name) uses a bunch of unique fighting outfits and weapons. This one deserved 6+ stars not 5.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sakura All the Way! ^_^, December 30, 2000

This review is from: Cardcaptor Sakura 1 (Paperback)
Cardcaptors Sakura #1 rox da house! Ok, off the slang. I thought that this comic book had really sweet (cool) animation. I liked how they showed their actions in the book. For instance, when they're mad, you can tell THEY'RE MAD. It's really nice also because there are five of the smaller comic books combined into one for less mula, I mean money.

The five main characters are Toya (Sakura's brother), Yuki (Toya's handsome friend), Tomoyo (Sakura's rich best friend), Kerberos (Kero is his nickname and he's the 'keeper of the clow cards'. A funny and hilarious 'stuffed animal' who talks), and, of course, SAKURA (The main character of the comic who is trying to find and capture all the clow cards).

Sakura, the cardcaptor, was your average, athletic, fourth grader until she went down into the basement. There she found the Clow card book. Suddenly, when she opened it, images of creatures flew out of the book, surronding her, then left out of the room. Little did she know that this was the start of a hectic, long-going adventure.

The comic book is also interesting because, like all Japanese comics, they have a little romance going on between two character, Yuki and Sakura.

Hopefully, if you buy this book, you'll enjoy it as much as I do and be in suspense waiting for the next book supposedly coming out on December 31, 2000. ^_^

3.0 out of 5 stars Mixx, Mixx, Mixx..., August 18, 2000
This review is from: Cardcaptor Sakura 1 (Paperback)
This book is not what it should be. Believe me, I LOVE Cardcaptor Sakura, but what Mixx has done to this masterpeice should not be allowed.

They have this annoying habit of seeming not to check for spelling errors. I've seen so many in here...And their lettering! They type in the text, in the ugliest and largest font possible, repelling anyone who opens the cover. Speaking of the cover...it looks like someone Xeroxed it and then laminated it. Ick. Not even the original cover.

The story is readable in Mixx's format, just not as enjoyable as if it were well-done. If you want a well-done cardcaptor Sakura manga... and buy the Bilingual Comics edition by Kodansha. Now THAT is a job well done.

Don't get me wrong, I adore Cardcaptor Sakura. Just not in the horribly amateurish *thing* that Mixx tries to pull off.

5.0 out of 5 stars Disturbingly cute -- but you gotta love it!, June 1, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Cardcaptor Sakura 1 (Paperback)
The first thing you'll notice about Cardcaptor Sakura is theincredible "pinkness" of the cover. Yes, folks, this book isunabashedly aimed at girls. English-translation publisher Tokyopop.com (formerly Mixx) has made CCS the flagship title of its new "Chix Comix" line, although there's no reason why guys shouldn't enjoy it too. Despite being CLAMP's most cutesy, sugar-coated work ever, Cardcaptor Sakura still has a smart, engaging plot. Girl opens book, girl loses cards, girl has to get cards back. Okay, so it's not exactly "Magic Knight Rayearth" in terms of scope, but hey! We all love a good adventure story. However, it does tend to be formulaic at times, with Sakura fetching a new card every chapter or so. Then there's her silly schoolgirl crush, and the cute animal sidekick Kero, and the bratty older brother ...

So why the 5 stars? Well, despite the lack of an earth-shattering plot, this cavity-inducing story is still a wonderful adventure to read. No two Sakura stories are the same -- she captures each new card using a new trick. The complexity increases after each chapter, which is what makes it fun. So, whether you're a guy or a girl, get this book and enjoy the adventures of everyone's favorite little cardcaptor, Sakura!

5.0 out of 5 stars A magnificent manga!, November 14, 2000
By
This review is from: Cardcaptor Sakura 1 (Paperback)
This first volume in the Cardcaptor Sakura saga is absolutely amazing! The artwork is top-notch (as is expected with CLAMP.) It is very detailed and extremely cute! The story is rather unique, Sakura, an ordinary girl opens The Clow, a magic book and awakens the gaurdian beast who let magical cards escape from the book. Sakura, therefore, is picked by the gaurdian beast to save the world from evil by sealing the cards, becoming Cardcaptor Sakura! The story is engaging and is also wonderful in how it can keep young children excited without putting the older ones to sleep. A must-see for every one! ^_^

5.0 out of 5 stars Card Captor Sakura~~> SUPER KAWAII!, August 2, 2000

I've been following along Card Captor Sakura for the past year, and lets say: I LOVE IT! I absolutely hate the ENGLISH version of CCS tho, and wish that they (Nelvana) would at least fix the anime. The manga translators did a good job! They fit it to be a lot like the original!

Card Captor Sakura is about a 10 year old girl, who lives with her father and brother (her mom died when she was young). Basically, one day she accidentally opens a book, and all the cards fly away (in the manga, the cards were already missing) and then Keroberus (Kero-chan ^_^) emerges from the book, he kind of fell asleep, and forgot to watch the cards. Now, Kero-chan turns Sakura into (Super Heroine to the extreme) CARD CAPTOR SAKURA! And now they must find the Clow Cards and prevent them from causing chaos to the world!

5.0 out of 5 stars Cardcaptor Sakura- My favorite Manga!, June 29, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Cardcaptor Sakura 1 (Paperback)
Cardcaptor Sakura is another masterpiece created by Clamp!

Cardcaptor Sakura is about a girl named Sakura who accidentally stumbles upon a book in her father's books. When she opens it, all these cards fly out. Also, Kero, Guardian of the Clow Cards, appears. He makes Sakura a Cardcaptor. Her job is to collect all the Clow Cards before they cause too much mischief.

Characters:
Clow Reed-a powerful magician who created the Clow Cards and sealed them away in a book
Li and Melin-related to each other, Li has special powers similar to Sakura's because he's related to Clow Reed
Toya-Sakura's big brother
Yukito (or Yuki)-Toya's friend, Sakura really likes him!
Tomoyo-Sakura's best friend, likes to video tape Sakura catching Clow Cards
Ms. Mitsuki-a substitute teacher, mysterious
Sakura's father-a teacher, really nice
Sakura's mother- she's deceased, the parts about Sakura's mother make it sad

If you read these, I would have the next one ready because are really fast reads, and they're good!

4.0 out of 5 stars Cute, sweet, and badly translated, October 26, 2001
By
This review is from: Cardcaptor Sakura 1 (Paperback)

Okay, I love CLAMP. And I hate Mixx, the publishing company. So the story gets 5 stars, the actual physical book gets zero.

Cardcaptor Sakura is the story of an ordinary ten year old girl, Sakura, who makes an extraordinary discovery. One day, in her father's library/basement, she discovers a book that's making an odd noise. When she opens it, she accidentally unleashes a deck of magical cards that, when not controlled, cause mayhem and madness in the world. In order to stop that, Sakura must become a Cardcaptor, whose responsibility is to capture and control the cards. She does this along with the help of Tomoyo, her sweet, slightly obsessive best friend who likes to make Sakura costumes, and Kero, the slightly attitudinal, absolutely adorable, and stuffed-animal like guardian of the Clow Cards. The cast of characters also includes Rika, Chiharu, Naoko, and Takashi Yamakazi, Sakura's other friends, Touya, her older brother who has a sister complex, and Yukito, his sweet, gentle best friend, both of whom are GORGEOUS!!!! (I am SUCH a fangirl ^_^) The plot is cute and sweet, and is fraught with slight hints of homosexuality, but is still one of the most innocent things I've ever read. The artwork is beautiful, as CLAMP's work always is.

Why, oh why did Mixx get the rights to this? The translations are terrible, they shortened the names in several instances (Yukito is changed to Yuki, a nickname which only Touya
uses). The print is blurry and so are the covers, and the pages fall out really easily.

All in all, Cardcaptor Sakura is a wonderful series, but get the Kodansha bilingual books. They're $8 more, but worth the money.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Very Cute Series!, June 14, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Cardcaptor Sakura 1 (Paperback)
I had heard a lot about this manga from people on the Internet and websites. So I decided to give it a try.

I am so glad I did! This series is in the same genre as Sailormoon, a comic for girls involving some kind of magical girl. Although, I enjoyed Cardcaptor Sakura more than Sailormoon.

Although Sakura and her best friend Tomoyo are fourth graders, people older than that will find their adventures interesting. And there are still some high school guys in there for people who aren't sure.

True to Mixx translations, there are some weird phrases, such as "thanky swanky" and the art isn't as good quality as in the original Japanese version. But if you can ignore that, there's an awesome story behind all of that.

I highly recommend this title!
