5.0 out of 5 stars "under-rated scores from a legendary composer", February 28, 2001
This review is from: Cardinal: Classic Film Music (Audio CD)
The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Paul Bateman give each score in this compilation new life - "The Cardinal (The Classic Film Music of Jerome Moross)", awesome performances with state of the art technology in playback. About the composer, Jerome Moross always distinctive and sometimes superior quality to the subject matter were his film scores. Was playing the piano as soon as he could reach the keyboard - played by ear at age four, by eight was composing. Close friends to Bernard Herrmann a school-mate at De Witt Clinton High School in Manhattan - two tremendously talented people.

Moross orchestrated for Aaron Copland, Hugo Friedhofer and Franz Waxman between 1940 and 1952 - composed his first score "CLOSE UP" in 1948, music genuine drama and excitement, with shades of Gershwin, simple horns and Latin American rhythms.

Inclusive within the collectable album - "THE JAYHAWKERS", a suite written on the heels of "The Big Country", inhabits the same landscape with big orchestrational sound of the Great American West - "SEVEN WONDERS OF THE WORLD", for the Holy Land a Hebraic melody, set with variations of flute with orchestrations blending with swells - "THE CAPTIVE CITY", is "pure Moross" as stated in the liner-notes, unmistakably our composer - "PROUD REBEL", the theme is very melodic, is complete with a beginning, a middle and ending - "THE CARDINAL", four movement suite arrangement by Christopher Palmer, one of the finest compositions ever written, liner-note tell the story in great detail.

Excellent liner notes by James Fitzpatrick (producer), thanks to Susanna Moross Tarjan and Reynold da Silva (associate producers) hats off to Silva Screen for this one-of-a-kind tribute to the legendary icon. If you enjoyed this CD, check out "The Big Country (music by Jerome Moross) on Silva America (SSD 1048), another classic score by our favorite composer - Jerome Moross!

Total Time: Disc One 42:28 on 7 Tracks & Disc Two 42:09 on 10 Tracks...Silva Screen SILKD 6030...(2001)
