From Library Journal
These two new volumes follow the same format as previous offerings in the series, compiling documents published by a variety of public and private institutions. According to the prefaces, "the documents chosen present basic medical information for the interested layperson." Cardiovascular Diseases contains pamphlets published by the National Institutes of Health and its sister health agencies and excerpts from publications of the American Heart Association. Subjects covered include descriptions of common heart and vascular problems, statistical and demographics data, drug and surgical therapies, living with cardiovascular disease, and lifestyle changes for healthier living. Respiratory Diseases and Disorders relies on the same government sources as well as the American Lung Association, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and McNeil Pharmaceutical. The respiratory system is described; common disorders are detailed, along with their detection and treatment; and common breathing irritants and their control are outlined. Current research and a glossary are also included. Since the information in both books comes from numerous sources, the quality and reading level vary from chapter to chapter. Publication dates of the source materials range from 1986 to 1994, with information often general and repeated frequently. Other books provide similar information in a better format; for instance The Yale University School of Medicine Heart Book (LJ 3/1/92) is a superior and cheaper choice over Cardiovascular Diseases. Recommended only for larger health collections. [The seventh volume in the series, Food and Animal Borne Diseases Sourcebook, is reviewed below.-Ed.]-Janet M. Schneider, James A.
