A must for Cardmakers,
By Ruthann (Phoenix, AZ) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Cardmaker's Workbook: The Complete Guide to Design, Color, and Construction Techniques for Beautiful Cards (Paperback)
This is a great book for all card makers. I'm not sure where to start... I like the way it discusses major color principles and theories, it helped me put together colors I wouldn't have thought to put together before. It also gives 'Designer Swatches' and then shows a couple of different cards created with those colors, which is great for new ideas. I love the "Designer Model" cards, they look so complicated, but Jenn breaks them down step by step so they will be easy to re-create. She also gives tips on how to simplify design for those 50 Holiday cards or party invitations you need to make. All in all there's something in here for card makers at all levels. Not only does it showcase some beautiful cards, there are also helpful reasons to send cards, "Sorry about your splinter" is definitely deserving of a card, and not one I would have thought about before...lol...

Better cardmaking,
By anya leone "phaedra" (San Jose CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Cardmaker's Workbook: The Complete Guide to Design, Color, and Construction Techniques for Beautiful Cards (Paperback)
This is a pretty book. Filled with lots of pictures, and instructions on how to make many of them. The instructions aren't as detailed as a newbie cardmaker might like, as some of the trim elements are not common, nor are the techniques to attach them. This book is not for beginners, as it shows some rather daunting card making that probably doesn't faze an experienced cardmaker. It is great, though, for design ideas. And if you are at all creative, these designs can be adapted to what you know how to do, not what you wish you could do, or could afford to do. Looks like the author has an unlimited budget to spend on card elements, paper, trims, etc.

This book is awesome. It covers almost every aspect of cardmaking and is easy to read and understand. The color pictures are great and they really give you a springboard to making your own cards and applying your own ideas. The price is great, especially for what you get!

I am a beginner and find the book to be very helpful, informative, and a pleasure to read and browse. Great sketches on how to make beautiful cards. Great information on card techniques. Wonderful information on how to use color when making your cards. Also gives you ideas on who to give out your cards to, etc.
However I am surprised by some of the bad reviews out here. 1. the cards do have directions and instructions on how to reproduce. 2. you will need to spend some money on buying supplies like any other hobby. The only thing I didn't like about the book when I first flipped through it was about downloading templates from the computer b/c I don't use a computer in my cardmaking room, but was pleasantly surprised when I could substitute most of the items with cutouts from my cricut machine.

The Cardmaker's Workbook covers just about everything you would need to know about card making. It focuses on color, design, and construction techniques. There is also instruction on how to make and decorate envelopes.
The author, Jenn Mason, shows uses of eyelets, punches, ribbon, stamping, pens, wire, decorative papers, and die cuts. She has even included Sentiments for birthdays, love, friendship, and holidays, among others. Included, also, is a handy resource page. It's a must-have item for all cardmakers!

This book has a lot of wonderful photos of all of the cards, but for those like myself who are just starting to get into card making, it isn't as detailed in explaining some of the methods that are used. It is great as an idea book and gave me lot of ideas on what I can do. They do tell you what materials are used though so that was a plus.
I think one of the best parts of the book is where they explain some of the basic principles of color, laying out items on a card and basics on tools and materials used.

I love the book. However the website for the publisher is broken and therefore the templates and other online materials are unavailable. Even the "Contact Us" link is broken, although, you can certainly still shop for other books there. Very disappointing.

What an excellent resource for everything paper. Full of techniques and great ideas. Also if you have ever wondered how to use specific scrapbook tools and techniques, this book is your one stop answer. Love it and highly recommend it to anyone that scrapbooks or makes cards. Definitely a "must have" referance guide for beginners and experts alike.

I am so glad I bought this book, not only because of its excellent info about color theory, how to "install" eyelets and ways and means of using embossing powder, etc. but also because the author's design ideas are well described and depicted in the book. The author is amazingly creative relative to card making and her ways of keeping the reader interested. I really LOVE this book and the author's presentation style. I hope some of her creativity rubs off onto me.
