Book Description

February 1, 1997
The demon-haunted cardsmith's apprentice Byron struggles with his limited skills and attacks from mysterious enemies.  And when he comes into the possession of some very hot magic-bearing cards, he draws the attention of the cardmaster Cerise.  Soon they're off to the Great Game up in the mountains for virtual "war across the table".  Gangs of cardplayers will battle with sprawling card decks simulating armies and supplies and terrain.  The prize is leadership of three small kingdoms.  If Byron and Cerise can stay alive.  If the leaders aren't assassinated by a spying traitors.  And if the pillaging hordes of the Shinyar don't ravage the valley first!

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

This is the book for which I get the most fan mail.  People LOVED this book.  Maybe it was the likeable characters, a tough swordswoman and a everyday-guy magician who'd collapse from magic fatigue and a plucky maid who steps up to the plate.  Maybe it was the orgy of cards - thousands of them spilled everywhere during the course of the book.  Maybe the colorful and fun setting - a war fought with card decks.

And everyone asked where the second book was.  The answer is, it was originally planned as a trilogy.  Then the original publisher backed out, and it was shopped around, and went to Baen, who decided to try one book as a test.  And sure enough, opted not to print the next two.

If I could secure the rights, I might write the second and third books.

Because people loved this one!

It's got heart. Architypal characters, but over-all well put together. And it inspires emotional response. A fun read (especially if you'd rather not touch your cards for a while.)
