FOREWORD

For well over 150 years, a deck of playing cards has been a part of American history. Playing cards has been a main stay for games of chance (gambling), and for the social games to play for fun.

No exact date is known for the first game played with cards, but a game known as WHIST has English origin back as far as 1674.

It is generally believed that in 1767, Benjamin Franklin having visited Paris, brought the game back to America where it was introduced as a variety game known as BOSTON. One of the many different variations the game became known for.

Edmund Hoyle (1672-1769) listed WHIST and other card games in his original writings. The first mention of a game of POKER in America was printed in 'Greens Reformed Gambler.' It contains a description of a game of POKER played on a river steamer in June 1834.

Two of the popular card games in the old western days was 5 card draw POKER and a game known as FARO.
