This review is from: Dora the Explorer Phonics Boxed Set #3 (Paperback)
These simple 'bite sized' books are excellent for new readers. I have been very pleased with the Phonics system and these books carry on the tradition of excellence. They are short enough to provide the child the accomplishment of reading an entire book but have enough difficult words to make them challenging. The inside cover of each book provides instructions on which sounds are being emphasized. The quality of each book, combined with my child's love of 'Dora' makes reading these a pleasure.

This package has 12 books - all with a concentration on a certain phonetic sound. Good for the beginning reader - and it's Dora, so always appealing.

If you have a Care Bears fan, these should please!,
This review is from: Care Bears: Phonics Box (Paperback)
My daughter is a major fan of the Care Bears, and so although she is a bit young for phonics (almost 3) I thought she'd enjoy these books. I also thought I would enjoy them as they are SHORT! We have a few other Care Bear books and I do have to admit they aren't great literature. This set isn't either, but the stories are not as bad as some of the longer books, and they do work in the sound being worked on quite a bit, so even if your child isn't ready to read, you can talk about the different phonics sounds and emphasize them. Of course they are also really ads for Care Bears, and my daughter likes to see if she owns all the bears pictured, and gather them around if she does. (luckily we have found most of the bears at yard sales, or they would have bankrupted us by now!) The tales deal with things like surprising others, having a box with a surprise in it, making Grumpy Bear happy in a surprising way...see a theme? It's always fun for kids to get lots of books in a little box, and I think this would be a great way to motivate a young reader, but only if they like Care Bears, of course!
