5.0 out of 5 stars Must have reference for developing country eye work, January 22, 2002
This review is from: Eye Care in Developing Nations (Paperback)
The author does a great job of succinctly covering the most important causes of blindness and vision loss in the developing world into a handy sized book.

Most ophthalmology and ocular pathology textbooks are written for North American and European clinicians in mind. The result of this is that important topics such as trachoma, nutritional blindness and river blindness are often scantly covered, if at all, as these conditions do not exist in industrialized countries.

For Western clinicians considering going on an overseas mission to provide services in a developing area, this book is a must read.
Outside of one or two other texts (such as "Eye Diseases Hot Climates" by Sandford-Smith), the only way to get information on some of the tropical conditions presented in this book would be to wade through a large number of seperate journal articles and WHO technical manuals/publications.

For those already working in developing countries, this is a useful reference, good for refresher learning and full of practical advise from somebody who has spent years in the field.
