Heavy on the Spiritual,
By
This review is from: The Care and Feeding of Indigo Children (Paperback)
Indigo children, a recognized group among today's young people, have been diagnosed, studied, and supported by psychologists, educators, and lay people. Born after 1978, they are described as bright, intuitive, strong-willed, and sometimes self-destructive individuals. I learned about them from some educators I served in a consulting capacity and read "The Indigo Children: The New Kids Have Arrived" by Lee Carroll and Jan Tober. I learned a lot from that book and found myself wanting more. That drive led me to this book.Compared to "The Indigo Children", this book fell short of my expectations. Because of the author's strong spiritual leaning, the topics, content, and treatment went much further into angels and prayers than it did into how to work practically with these special young people. Perhaps I should have expected this when I saw the author's photo on the back cover. It's a rather unusual shot of a woman in a forest with a Koala bear and she does not appear to have clothes on. Different kind of author photo than I'm accustomed to. Virtue is described as a PhD "spiritual doctor of psychology." She's heavily invested in angels (author of "Healing with Angels"), which is quite obvious in the book. There is significant text devoted to angels, prayers, and the evils of pharmaceuticals like Ritalin. Some readers may find the pre-written prayers helpful for them. My Indigo step-daughter was less than enthusiastic about prescriptions for communicating with spirits, though the book suggests that some Indigos are really into that sort of experience. The book includes a number of valuable tips about diet, concentration, and overcoming insomnia. I would have personally preferred more emphasis on these practical techniques than the heavy spiritual component and astrological comments. If you are into the spiritual, you'll enjoy this book, becoming immersed in all of its aspects. If you are not so spiritual, you'll still find some worthwhile concrete ideas and techniques interwoven in the text.

Breakthrough book for parents and educators,
By
This review is from: The Care and Feeding of Indigo Children (Paperback)
In this book, Doreen Virtue describes clearly the ways in which we are evolving as a species. Children born since about 1975 kids are demonstrating specific traits, which are different than those of previous generations. Along with these different traits come different needs. They carry more energy. They have more finely developed intuitive abilities. They need a reason to do things; rote learning and rigid authority are intolerable to them. They need activities to be life-purposeful. They have a sense of life purpose that is strong and must be respected. And they have great gifts to share as light-workers, innovators, healers and problem-solvers.Dr. Virtue gives parents the information they need to support the unfoldment and development of their kids in every aspect of life from "care and feeding" their kids physically to nurturing their spiritual development, talents and abilities. She draws upon her experience as a psychologist and a parent, on spiritual guidance and on good, solid research. She writing "voice" is clear, accessible, authoritative and loving. This is a breakthrough book for parents, teachers and educators at every level, social workers, therapists and pediatricians. It will help them understand why medicating higher energy levels is counterproductive and will give them practical tips on alternative solutions, so that they can assist not only their own kids, but our culture itself to flourish.

Healing the Indigo Children!,
By Jenny Cohen "Jenny Cohen" (La Jolla, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Care and Feeding of Indigo Children (Paperback)
Spiritual communicator and author Doreen Virtue provides blessings for all parents and teachers of children with the information she brings forth in this book. Learn how you can better understand and relate to the vast majority of the children ages 0-24 on the planet right now, and learn tools and techniques that are vitally important to the well-being of these amazing children. Dr. Virtue discusses in great deal the negative effects of the prescription drug ritalin, and what you can do if a child you know is on the drug, but could instead be treated with natural, more humane methods. She outlines the dangers of ritalin and other psychotropic drugs, shedding light on a subject that many people know very little about. The book also contains practical, down-to-earth guidance and advice on how to talk to Indigo children, help them improve their grades, health, physical bodies and emotions, and tune into their spiritual gifts and inner knowledge. There is specific guidance about food and dietary intake to keep blood sugar levels healthy, and how certain foods can positively affect the overall health, well-being, and even behavior patterns of Indigo children. Doreen also addresses the topic of Indigo children seeing into the spirit world (angels, deceased loved ones, etc.) and how you can help the children understand these visions so they are not frightened by them. It is a manual that the angels would like all adults involved with children to have, for easy reference and powerful guidance in healing issues that tend to arise with these special kids. The book also explains how to determine if you or your child (or a child you know) is an Indigo. And, there are detailed, dynamic interviews with Indigo children, which enables adults to better understand these special kids' perpectives, and how to deal with their behaviorial issues. I also found the information on astrology quite interesting, as it outlines particular traits of the various sun signs and helps you understand yourself and your children more thoroughly. A must-have for anyone on a spiritual path who desires to learn more about helping these unique children!

Amazing... I found myself!,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Care and Feeding of Indigo Children (Paperback)
I have a 3 y old son who I could recognize as an indigo child, so I decided to learn more and bought "The Care and Feeding of Indigo Children"by Doreen, PhD Virtue. After the first chapter I was crying like a baby, because all these years I was "bullied" and make fun of by adults because I was hyperactive, always asked too many questions, didn't want to conform and seeing dead people... Well, here it was black on white my life! She says that some of us are "lightworkers", another book to read I guess. Now, I have the tools to guide and help my son who is already showing signs of struggling to be and remain different... special. I also wept for the million of children on Ritalin. Fantastic tool, a source of enlightment and happiness! More people should open their mind and take a leap of faith. ...

This is a NEW AGE book on childrearing. Take it or leave it.,

I've seen a lot of reviewers trash this book because they think it is a lot of nonsense New Age mallarky.
People, THIS IS A NEW AGE BOOK! If you do not subscribe to the metaphysical philosophy, don't buy this book. It's that simple. There is no need in insulting everybody who DOES believe such things by saying this book is stupid because it is too spiritual. Go find a Dr. Phil book and have it your way. Leave the review area for people who knew what they were getting when they bought the book.

Indigo Child - New Age Label For Neurodivergents,
By
This review is from: The Care and Feeding of Indigo Children (Paperback)
I read the book, THE CARE AND FEEDING OF INDIGO CHILDREN by
Doreen Virtue, Ph.D. I took a look at it,and I found that I could strongly relate to this stuff. Therefore, I bought the book. The more I read it, the more I believed that Indigo Child seemed like a label for children with learning disabilities and AD/HD. I feel that New Agers created this label because of the skyrocketing increase of children with AD/HD. The problem is that the AD/HD condition is not just exclusive to children. There has been an increase of diagnosing AD/HD in adults. Some were diagnosed AD/HD at 60 yrs old. In 2004, I was diagnosed inattentive type ADHD at the age of 32, and my mother told me that she can relate to many of the symptoms AD/HD and Dyslexia. From what my mother told me,my father seemed to have Dyslexia and AD/HD. From what I have seen in my mother's side of the family, numerous relatives have these AD/HD traits. Everyone of my mother's 4 halfsiblings dropped out of high school, and my mother never even went to high school. They did find their niches, and they did well in their careers except for my uncle Dino has gone through many jobs but he has learned many skills. My Uncle Eddie who is now 47 years old, was always hyperactive. He was in special ed with speech problems like me. My stepgrandmother refused to have him medicated because both her and my grandfather were hyperactive, and they weren't on medication. It seems that hyperactivity runs in the family. With knowing these things, I do not believe in Indigo generation nor the Indigo label itself. The label is not going to help a child with problems with learning to read and communicate as well as learn. Special education helped correct my Dyslexic,Dyspraxic problems, and so I am a compensated Dyslexic,Dyspraxic As for the AD/HD, I really don't think it's a problem. I honestly feel that it's an alternative learning style that doesn't fit well with mainstream classroom, and I feel the same about Dyslexia. I also feel that because of their sensitivity, the wrong foods can affect them in adverse ways. I also feel that the fluorescent lights in the classrooms can make them feel uncomfortable and can exacerbate both AD/HD,Dyslexic,and Dyspraxic symptoms. Fluorescent lights can make Scotopic Sensitivity worse. The fluorescent lights can make people with Scotopic Sensitivity have problems seeing black print on white paper due to reflection of the light on the paper. I was a special ed student for 3 yrs in elementary school. If it wasn't for special education(motor skills therapy, auditory therapy, speech therapy, phonics training, I would always had severe problems with language processing and very poor motor skills because of my Dyslexia and Dyspraxia. I have had psychiatric misdiagnoses of psychotic, bipolar crap by psychiatrists in adulthood because they were ignorant of my Dyslexic,Dyspraxic nature. I have history of anxiety and depression. I have always have been extremely sensitive on every level too. I was referred to as being "special" by my mother and stepfather. After all, I had special needs. I was in special education. A lot of people had no idea how much I hated that word. You know how some people say "Oh..You think that you are so special!" to cut you down. They didn't know they were talking to somebody that had special needs and was a special ed student. I definitely believe that Indigo Child is just a New Age copout label for people like myself. I don't believe in the Indigo Child propaganda. I believe that Indigo Child is an umbrella term for people with atypical neurological systems(AD/HDers,Dyslexics,Dyspraxics,other Learning Disabled,Aspergers,Autistics) like myself. They have always existed. There is nothing new about people like us. We're the types that have been in self contained special education classes, special schools, group homes, doped up on heavy antipsychotics, gave us lobotomies,or locked us up in asylums. Our types were probably burnt at the stake in other time periods. In modern times, we just have more awareness of the diversity of neurological make-ups in people. We have a very long way to go for society to tolerate and accept neurodiversity which is shown by the skyrocketing increase of neurodivergent people on psychiatric medications.

the care and feeding of Indigo Children,

I thought I was the only parent with a child like this. This book has a lot of insight and practical ways to help your child and to my surprise myself. It confirmed many things that I knew already, but having some assurance in realizing that " you are not alone" helped tremendously. The spiritual aspect depends on your personal beliefs, but it does help to know that it can be effective in your life. I've tried a lot of the exercises with success, but I still have some work to do. Thank you for your insight and deciding to write it in a book!

This book is ok. I'm a christian person and who also likes New Age stuff.
The author did the best she could in this subject. I enjoyed fully it was not a waste of my money. Whatever your believes are in does not matter b/c the truth is that there are special souls born into this Earth with a special purpose and they have been given more talents and more strenght to accomplish this mission. It's a true fact that stronger souls are being born now. Look at the world around you, it makes sense.I say if you are curious get it and you'll be ok.

Some ideas in this book were right on, some were unbelieveable to me (such as indigos choosing their own age to die - particularly living to be a few hundred years old). Aside from strange ideas like that I think the information in this book can help indigos and non indigos, such as eating healthy and avoiding dyes and preservatives. However, contrary to popular belief, I do not believe most indigo's are true ADD or ADHD, and the ones in this book giving their eperience of the medicines were biased. Medicine does help some children who truly need it (though I believe you should try to wait until they are at least 8-9 years old). Doctors will happily write any parent a perscription because they make money doing so. This is what they have been taught. Parents should always try alternative methods first, and also check for common allergies (wheat, milk, soy, eggs, peanuts etc.) My sons have a wheat allergy (one who is an indigo in particular, his behavior changed drastically when wheat and milk were removed from his diet. The older one (a sweet crystal child) did start medicine when he was 9 but takes a low dose, does not "space out on meds or seem high", and was able to get out of a self contained class to regular classes, have a B+ average, and has his PDD_NOS / autism diagnosis now classified in partial remission. He has many friends and is well liked by his teachers as well. You can not tell he is different (he grew out of his odd speech) except for the fact he is so well behaved. His other brothers, well thats another story...(but they're great too!)
I believe many of the indigos in here were mislabled (as they could be gifted), and ADHD and gifted children share traits such as questions and challenging authority. They were not severe enough to warrent meds, but unfortunately schools pressure it when children do not conform. Always keep respect for your child and give them love and structure (and discipline if needed.) Putting down meds so much I believe causes a separation between traditional and alternative medicine when what I feel is needed is a blending of the two systems to benefit the whole population, indigo or not. |
