Book Description

October 26, 1999
"This book is a thank-you letter. A long overdue reply to all of the people who, during one of the most difficult and painful periods my family has had to endure, took time and wrote to us; faxed us; phoned or visited us; prayed for us; joined hands for us; sent us flowers, gifts, white light, religious tokens and talismans, books, tapes, drawings, funny stories and jokes that made us laugh, tales of overcoming hardship that inspired us and gave us hope. . . ."

When Christopher Reeve was paralyzed in a riding accident on May 27, 1995, letters poured in from around the world, some addressed only to "Superman, USA." It was an astonishing demonstration of sympathy and support for a man who had become an American icon. In Care Packages, Dana Reeve, Christopher's wife, has collected some of the most unforgettable letters and gifts that her family received. There are thoughts and prayers from Hollywood's greatest stars, like Katharine Hepburn ("Golly. What a mess. Call me.") and Robert De Niro, politicians and presidents, and, of course, the everyday heroes who have prevailed in the face of nearly overwhelming adversity to lead rich and fulfilling lives. These letters are inspiring, funny, surprising, and always deeply touching. Some writers offer advice (listen to jazz, try LSD psychotherapy, get a cat), while others simply tell their own stories in a beautiful gesture of hope and community. And sometimes the youngest fans say it best ("I'm sorry that you fell off your horse. Let's hope it won't happen again"; "i broke my neck....im ok now. i hope you will be too"). But Care Packages is not only about the "strangers and other friends" who have had such a profound effect on the Reeves. With an introduction to each chapter by Dana Reeve, it is also the story of a marriage and a family facing the ultimate test--from the fear of the emergency room to the long, hard days of rehab to the bittersweet moments of a wedding anniversary--and reaffirming their commitment in a thousand new ways.

From Library Journal

Letters that helped Christopher Reeve survive his crippling accident, blended with commentary from his wife.
Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

By the third week after the riding accident that rendered him paraplegic, actor Christopher Reeve had received 35,000 pieces of mail, and the stream of cards, letters, and packages, though naturally tapering down, kept coming. Reeve's wife, Dana, selects from that postal tidal wave and presents her choices in thematic chapters, such as "Overcoming Adversity" and "Cures and Recommendations," interspersed with smaller gatherings of recollections from correspondents who knew or had met the actor. Dana contributes an introductory note for each chapter and a handwritten final word to her husband. A handful of photos of Reeve before the accident, photos sent with well-wishes, and some famous-name notes (e.g., those from President Clinton, Paul McCartney, and Penn and Teller) make appropriate illustrations. Since I was a little kid, Superman was my hero, and when the man who *I* thought of as Superman fell off his horse, I was devastated. I wrote a long and embarrassingly gushy letter to him, never dreaming he'd even be the one to read it, let alone having it put into a BOOK! As an aspiring author, this is both a thrill and a humiliation-- my letter was TERRIBLE! Nevertheless, I hope you'll buy a copy. There's some stuff in here that will REALLY inspire you. Christopher Reeve is a living example of the fact that God can take bad things and use them for astonishing good.

5.0 out of 5 stars You'll be touched and inspired, November 6, 1999

If you don't mind shedding a good tear when you watch "Touched By An Angel," but you have no appetite for fake inspirational slop, this book is perfect.

The genuine letters from the hearts of real people to other real people are something that nobody could make up. It's like really being touched by human angels.

This book is a real blessing. It's also something you can pick up and get a blessing from in just a minute or two, then go on about the tasks at hand. Don't waste a minute! Get one for you and another for someone you want to share the blessing with!

Really, the question shouldn't be whether to buy the book, but how many you can buy.

God's love is in those letters. You will feel it.

5.0 out of 5 stars My letter to Christopher Reeve is in the book, November 1, 1999

Four years ago, I wrote a letter to Christopher Reeve. At the time I was in fifth grade. It was a simple brief "get well" letter. I had no idea that my letter would be one of the few chosen to be in his new book. I am incredibly honored to be in his book and wish him only the best. Love, Emily Mark
