Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 7-11-This new series examines a variety of interesting careers, some rather unique, in an easy-to-read format. For each one, there is a profile of someone involved in the profession, an explanation of what the job entails, preparation requirements, special activities and information, the outlook for the future, and a list of related occupations. Instead of the standard ``how to get a job'' chapter, each volume concludes with an exercise to determine which of two applicants should be hired, including sample resumes, letters, and interviewers' comments. Only a few brief tips are given for job hunting. Human Body looks at a paramedic, biomechanist, family physician, and more. Outdoors includes an environmental horticulturist, wilderness outfitter, aerologist, and fishing pro. Math and Computers profiles a forensic accountant, interior designer, video-games programmer, and research analyst. These books are similar to the Millbrook ``Choices'' series, especially in their first-person perspectives, but without giving salaries or places to contact for more information. For students doing reports, these omissions could pose a problem. However, the books will be useful for exploring career options. With their exercises and activities, they will help young adults get a better feel for what each field is all about. Pertinent, good-quality, full-color photos and illustrations abound, and feature people from various ethnic backgrounds. Covers are attractive, but the format makes the books appear juvenile when in fact the information is of interest to high school students. Still, where additional material is needed for teens, these entries are a worthwhile purchase.-Diane P. Tuccillo, Mesa Public Library, AZ
