Since its beginning in the early 1900s, career counseling has been steeped in the traditions of the positivist world view. In essence, career counseling involved assessment, diagnosis and prediction where the counselor assumed the role of an expert and the client that of a passive responder. With the influence of the constructivist worldview, irreversible changes in the world of work, and increasing demand for career counseling services, career counseling has been challenged to modernize its practice.
