Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-10-Reeves and Huebeck take a creative approach to their topic while offering a world of interesting careers for future job seekers. After taking an occupational-interest quiz (the authors repeatedly warn readers not to write in the book if they do not own it), students learn about 15 occupations from veterinarian to recycling entrepreneur. In each chapter, they meet a specialist (arborist, botanist, entomologist, hydrologist, marine biologist, zoologist, etc.) and learn about the person's first paying job and current position. Each chapter also features hands-on activities related to that career, suggested reading, Web sites, and related organizations. The tone is friendly and light. Several underlying messages are repeated: education is important, math is a component of many jobs, it's never too early to start planning one's future, and girls are not limited to a small menu of professions. Advice on how to interview local practitioners and set up job-shadowing experiences is valuable. Black-and-white photos and drawings appear throughout. A well-organized, creative look at exploring occupations.

More About the Author

What do you want to be when you grow up? Answering that single question has taken me on an amazing journey as an author. Little did I know 10 years ago when I was writing the very first title, Career Ideas for Kids Who Like Science, that I would eventually fill over 50 books with ideas to help students of all ages find bright futures. And, believe it or not, there are still more books to come!

Two of my new series add some extra fun to the career exploration process. In the first, the Virtual Apprentice series, young readers find out what it's really like to be...a pop musician, a firefighter, an oceanographer and nine other exciting professions. Hot off the press in August of 2009 is the Way Out Work series, a full-color, high interest take on Goofy Jobs, Scary Jobs, Gutsy Jobs, and more.

All of my books are carefully designed to provide enough entertainment to keep kids interested and enough educational oomph for teachers to use them in their classrooms. The idea was to link learning with the real world in order to spark ideas, inspire dreams, and get kids thinking about all the things they could be.

This is a really great book for kids and frankly it's better than most adult career guides in that it features a wider range of careers and interviews with people in each type of job. It's a great starting point for researching careers.
