Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-9Reeves begins each well-organized book by asking readers to think about what they like to do and their goals, and to respond to questions to determine their interest areas. Through simple calculations, they can then deduce where their skills and interests intersect within these fields. The author follows these sections with an examination of some of the different opportunities available, providing a list of the skills needed for each job, a description of the position, and a profile of someone in the profession. Each job description is dotted with numerous Web sites, professional associations, and resources, and includes practical ways to learn more about the career. The technique of engaging students in a step-by-step manner makes these titles good how-tos for finding an appropriate occupation. Each volume concludes with a chapter that offers additional suggestions, activities, and a list of further reading for positions that dont require a college education. The authors tone is chatty and informal but its occasionally condescending in Sports. The books are illustrated with black-and-white drawings and photographs of average quality and feature a diverse group of individuals. Students will find these books informative, fun, and a comfortable and interactive way to approach career exploration.Janice C. Hayes, Middle Tennessee State University, Murfreeboro

More About the Author

What do you want to be when you grow up? Answering that single question has taken me on an amazing journey as an author. Little did I know 10 years ago when I was writing the very first title, Career Ideas for Kids Who Like Science, that I would eventually fill over 50 books with ideas to help students of all ages find bright futures. And, believe it or not, there are still more books to come!

Two of my new series add some extra fun to the career exploration process. In the first, the Virtual Apprentice series, young readers find out what it's really like to be...a pop musician, a firefighter, an oceanographer and nine other exciting professions. Hot off the press in August of 2009 is the Way Out Work series, a full-color, high interest take on Goofy Jobs, Scary Jobs, Gutsy Jobs, and more.

All of my books are carefully designed to provide enough entertainment to keep kids interested and enough educational oomph for teachers to use them in their classrooms. The idea was to link learning with the real world in order to spark ideas, inspire dreams, and get kids thinking about all the things they could be.

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful book for kids who won't be pro athletes, June 24, 2011

I bought this as a teacher appreciation gift for my 5th grader's P.E. teacher. I donated the book to the school library in her honor, but first, I gave it to the teacher to see. She loved it!

The book offers a variety of ways to be involved with sports as a profession without being a pro athlete. Many kids and youth only think of pro athletes (or P.E. teachers) when they think of sports beyond high school or college. The book offers a myriad of ways that one can stay closely involved with athletics in one's career without being a pro athlete or teacher.

The only thing I would change about the book is that I wish it had included "sports statistician" as a career option. For kids who enjoy both sports and math, this is a great option, and it's one that few think to follow. Aside from this, I thought the book offered a good variety of choices for career options (I gave the book to the library a few weeks ago and can't remember all the choices now). Take a look at the book's table of contents to get ideas.

My child's teacher was delighted with the book's approach, and she was excited to have a resource in the school library for kids who demonstrate interest in a sports career.

The book is written in such a way as to engage young readers (I'd say grades 3-6) and capture their interest. I recommend it.
