Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-9-Both books begin with the same test to help readers determine their individual abilities and interests. With the results as a catalyst, they can then explore the wide array of careers that are examined in detail. In Art, jobs such as actor, animator, chef, and photojournalist are included. Communications careers range from hotel manager to publicist to broadcaster. Each entry defines the position, gives suggestions for "trying it on" through activities or places to visit, and describes it from the perspective of someone working in the field. Relevant books, CD-ROMs, magazines, Web sites, and organizations to contact are given where appropriate. Both books have lists of additional career opportunities with practical advice on how to investigate them and suggestions for further reading. Reeves's writing is upbeat, easy to read, and filled with pertinent information. The format is appealing and in the few fill-in-the-blanks sections, readers are reminded that they should use a separate piece of paper. Black-and-white photographs and pencil drawings illustrate the books. Career Discovery Encyclopedia (Ferguson, 1997) and Maria Gisler's Art (VGM, 1998) are good choices, but these titles are outstanding.

More About the Author

What do you want to be when you grow up? Answering that single question has taken me on an amazing journey as an author. Little did I know 10 years ago when I was writing the very first title, Career Ideas for Kids Who Like Science, that I would eventually fill over 50 books with ideas to help students of all ages find bright futures. And, believe it or not, there are still more books to come!

Two of my new series add some extra fun to the career exploration process. In the first, the Virtual Apprentice series, young readers find out what it's really like to be...a pop musician, a firefighter, an oceanographer and nine other exciting professions. Hot off the press in August of 2009 is the Way Out Work series, a full-color, high interest take on Goofy Jobs, Scary Jobs, Gutsy Jobs, and more.

All of my books are carefully designed to provide enough entertainment to keep kids interested and enough educational oomph for teachers to use them in their classrooms. The idea was to link learning with the real world in order to spark ideas, inspire dreams, and get kids thinking about all the things they could be.
