Not what the title says...,
By A Customer
This review is from: Career Management for the Creative Person (Paperback)
Maybe it just me, or perhaps I should have read a bit of it in a store instead of ordering near blind on line. "Career Management for the Creative Person" should have been titled "Are You Interested in a Creative Career?" It is bursting at the spine with self-examination test to discover if you're a creative right brain type or not. While this book may be good for those who are doing some serious soul searching, it is not for those who already know and embrace their right brain and are just looking for a kick in the rump to get back on track.

This review is from: Career Management for the Creative Person (Paperback)
In this exciting book, Author Lee Silber tells us, "You can have it all when it comes to a creative career--if you know how." And he gives us practical and applicable tips and techniques to help us know our deepest desires and talents and set our goals to achieve them. He shows us how to find our career niche and earn a living doing what we love. Career Management for the Creative Person helps us to overcome the challenges right brainers face and to make our creativity and unique nature work for us. We learn how. to market ourselves and our art and be our own boss in a field we enjoy.. . Silber gives us specific examples of well known people who overcame great obstacles. Dr. Seuss's books were rejected by 23 publishers and then sold 6 million copies. He shares his secrets of how to network, meet celebrities, use a personal touch, benefit from a Web page, find an agent if we choose to have one. He teaches us to prepare a modern resume, portfolio and cover letter. He explains how to handle an interview from either sides. . He discusses his successful promotions, how to find an unusual hook, target the right audience and connect with them.. The author includes great quotes: "I don' try to dance better than anyone else, only better than myself," Mikhail Baryshnikov. Lee's sense of humor makes the book fun to read. "Computers aren't intelligent. They only think they are." "The best time I ever had with Joan Crawford was when I pushed her down the stairs in Whatever Happened to Baby Jane," Bette Davis. This book helps us realize that we are all creative and shows us how to use our unique creativity to find or create a fulfilling career. Any one with the courage to follow their dreams will love this book. Just follow Silber's advice, "Read the book and apply its easy to understand directions." What have we got to lose? A Must Have Guide for Right-Brainers,
This review is from: Career Management for the Creative Person (Paperback)
This book puts everything in perspective for Right-Brainers. You don't have to fit into a mold, you can be different and also productive. Lee makes you feel that is okay to take a different path to your destined goals. Without goals whether you are left-brained or a right-brained person the journey will be long and dubious. This book provides the outline necessary to truly get to know one-self and what you expect out of life and career. The techniques given are clear and realistic. The author states the process with humor and personal antidotes; this gives the reader a positive mental view that anything is possible. This book is a must read for any Creative along with Lee's other book Time Management for the Creative Person. With this winning combination, if the techniques are applied I believe you can be on your way to a very long profitable and most of all enjoyable career and life.

Lee Silber has a gift for communicating a complex group of ideas and thoughts in a simple and practical way. The exercises, quotes and fast facts make this a great tool for real life applications. This book is very encouraging to people at all stations of the work place. I was able to apply many of these ideas and tecniques even within a government agency. Lee was able to be reached on-line and gracious enough to lend further support and edification. Thanks Lee!

Repeat information; but still helpful,

This review is from: Career Management for the Creative Person (Paperback)
Though I believe this book came first, I read the "Self-Promotion" book before this one. I found that a lot of the stories are repeated. But, this book does eventually give some good tips and advice. This book is also not geared towards someone like me who has recently lost their job. Silber spends a lot of time in the book assesing if the reader is right-brained or left-brained, and if they're ready to go into a creative career. I had no choice when I was downsized. And, I already knew I was a right-brainer. So, I had to skim over those chapters. Other than that though, I found the book to be helpful. Silber is an excellent writer, and always keeps the reader entertained. I found many ways to make Phillustrations.com a more successful venture.

Career Management for the Creative Person,
This review is from: Career Management for the Creative Person (Paperback)
At a point where I'm considering a career change, this book has been a great help. Lee's books are fun to read, and this one is also great! He puts in a lot of helpful tips, quizes, and lists. Being more "both-brain" than right brain makes no difference in the insight that this book provides to people wanting to know "why" they do what they do for a living. Put this book on your list of "must reads!"

A great read for us right-brainers!,

This review is from: Career Management for the Creative Person (Paperback)
This book really is full of fantastic tips and tricks to help us creative types combat our innate weaknesses and develop skills to get our productivity up. I would have to agree with some of the other reviews that this book is geared more to the person who is initially entering a creative field. I have freelanced for three years and have been in design for nearly 8 years, so some information wasn't relevant. Even if you have 'been at it' for a while, though, this book has helped shed new light on both the challenges and rewards of being a right-brainer. Lee's writing style is funny and engaging, and I am determined to finish reading this (I've got one chapter to go - a rarity in my world!!). In fact, I plan on reading more in his series for creative individuals based on the quality of this book.

Yes, Yes, this is a great book for right brained people. Lee Silber has a great style of writing, and has certainly done a great job at right brain traits and attributes. I really enjoyed this book, and then went on to order other books by Lee. Lee is a unique creative person. You won't believe how much this guy gets done in his life. Makes you envious. I wish I had his energy.

A MUST BUY,

Lee Silber has done it again, writing an excellent help guide for any writer or artist, or anyone who is even remotely thinking of becoming one. Silber provides icredible insight, energy, and confidence on a friendly, conversation level that I think the masses can easily relate to. Who else could find one venue to meld anecdotes from the likes of Jimmy Buffett, Ally Sheedy, William Shakespeare, and Ryan Leaf? Even if you aren't an aspiring creative, you'll love all of the little stories and advice Silber provides. It's a very entertaining reading, and he's obviously done his homework.

BUY THIS BOOK!,
This review is from: Career Management for the Creative Person (Paperback)
When I saw this book, it had my name written all over it. Being a creative person is wonderful but it is also a challenge. Career Management for the Creative Person helps to put everything into perspective so one can successfully and happily fulfill their dreams. I loved Lee's style of writing. I was never bored and found the book hard to put down. I was inspired by numerous stories but more importantly, I was given practical advice. Creative types, like myself, don't like the word "practical", but as Lee points out, the successful artist needs to develop this skill to some degree to create success. I really identified with this and it is has helped me focus and go for what I want. I actually loved the chapter on "The Seven (Bad) Habits of Highly Ineffective Creative People". Lee points out all the trouble that creatives can get into and after reading this chapter, you really want to avoid those bad habits (like procrastination and getting into debt) . If you are creative, know a creative person &/or you just want to read a really great book, BUY THIS BOOK! |
