Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 9 Up--This hefty volume details the requirements and specifics of work for 81 careers in the sciences, including those with business and education applications. Each profile contains an at-a-glance summary of duties, alternate job titles, a salary range, employment prospects/advancement prospects (rated poor, fair, good, or excellent), requisite education and training, experience required, special skills and personality traits, and licensure/certification information. This summary is expanded upon in a two- to three-page article with additional details added to the essay. Unfortunately, the Web sites and suggestions for additional reading appear at the back of the book and many students may not think to look closely at the back matter. An article on education and training strategies, a list of education and training resources, contact information for professional associations, and a glossary are also appended. The writing is solid and accurately describes the scope of each position. The special skills and personality traits will be much appreciated by college counselors and teachers as it describes the importance of good writing and speaking skills (something science-oriented students often don't pay enough attention to) as well as the importance of teamwork. The academic approach of this book makes it a good complement to the breezier "Great Jobs" series (VGM). Public, high school, and college libraries will find this presentation a solid addition to their career sections.--Courtney Lewis, Wyoming Seminary College Preparatory School, Kingston, PA
