Editorial Reviews

Review

“...frees the creative person from ‘all-or-nothing’ thinking...offers clear road map for finding an exciting, balanced, and fulfilling life.” -- Debra Laks, Director, Career Transition Resources, and Career Development Specialist, Network-Program Committee

“Dr. Ormont’s book is a comprehensive and empowering guide for any performing artist facing change.” -- Suzie Jary, M.S.W., C.S.W., Director of Client Services, Career Transition For Dancers

From the Publisher

Many creative people have long accepted that they must either suffer financially to pursue their dreams or entirely give up their aspirations to make ends meet. Both avenues have traditionally been frustrating, as the "starving artist" would panic every time rent is due or the mainstream professional would pine for the artistic endeavors that he or she abandoned in order to make a living. For creative people traveling on either path, there is cause for celebration. In the only book of its kind, Career Solutions for Creative People unveils the keys for artists of all disciplines to find the time and freedom to pursue their talents while also making a stable and rewarding living.

For author Dr. Ronda Ormont, the posthumous Career Solutions for Creative People is the permanent record and natural extension of her work as a career counselor who specialized in guiding actors, singers, dancers, musicians, set and costume designers, directors, writers, and other artists. Ormont distilled this essential volume from her more than twenty years as a work counselor and interviews with more than five thousand people from every walk of the creative life. Citing real-life examples, Ormont illustrates how others have struggled with unequal investments in their creative and practical lives and how those imbalances were resolved.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't say enough about this book, March 21, 2004

This review is from: Career Solutions for Creative People: How to Balance Artistic Goals with Career Security (Paperback)
Dr. Ormont explains how damaging the boring, underpaid "day job" can be for artists over the long run, and how IT IS POSSIBLE to find work that sustains financially and emotionally without draining creative energy. The book is motivational but also has practical information on resume-writing, personality tests, launching a career change, etc. Even if you aren't a "creative person," this book can truly help you to change your thoughts about making a living, and therefore, your life.

This review is from: Career Solutions for Creative People: How to Balance Artistic Goals with Career Security (Paperback)
I bought this book about 7 years ago, and i found it very intriguing, powerful and helpful the firs time i used it.
"Used" us the word because the book really helped me to decide where i want to go next in my professional life, which was to become a Graphic Designer.

These days i am reading the book again, as i am again in a turning point in my professional life, and am trying to decide what the next step is.
In the second read i am amazed at how professional, helpful and insightful the book is for me. It actually feels like i have a friend walking with me through this complex decision i am making, and it feels less alone.

I am grateful for this book.
