Career Counselling Tips from a Minority Perspective, November 3, 2000
This review is from: Career Success is Color-Blind: Overcoming Prejudice and Eliminating Barriers in the Workplace (Paperback)
This book is a must-read for minority professional at any stage of their careers - soon-to-be or recent grads; corporate ladder climbers; downsized executives or those seeking to make a change. As a 33-year-old black woman attorney who mentors young professionals, "Career Success..." is an outstanding reference tool that I have been recently recommending to every professional student I meet.
From interviewing techniques to what to do succeed once you've got the job, "Career Success..." is filled with career resource information from a minority perspective. For example, in Chapter 1, the reader is provided with twelve steps for developing a business mindset and successfully overcome predjudicial barriers. Additionally, Chapter 9 explains in helpful detail the importance of finding a mentor or "letting a mentor find you."
For those with a real interest in succeeding in their professional careers and willing to make the time committement to read this book from cover to cover, the book's 326 pages are easy to get through. For the majority of us, however, "Career Success.." will be used as a reference guide during the applicable phase of our career.
What I enjoyed most about " Career Success...", is that it recognizes that race and cultural differences can be a barrier to career success. Most other career resource literature available is "blind" to this fact. This book also raises the issue that sometimes it's not race that derails a career. Rather, our inexperience with playing corporate games that is the real problem. "Career Success..." provides sound advice for overcoming both of these barriers.
