4.0 out of 5 stars Great resource!
Gordon Miller truly captures the essence of Career Coaching. This is a great do-it-yourself guide to positioning yourself as the "Master of Your Domain," or the mapmaker of your own career.

I haven't finished this yet, but so far he has talked of advising several people to get high-tech certifications or training, and said that this has led them to better, more lucrative jobs where employers value them tremendously. Maybe when he was writing this that was a truism, but no longer. He also states early on that you do not necessarily need training, that...

Gordon Miller truly captures the essence of Career Coaching. This is a great do-it-yourself guide to positioning yourself as the "Master of Your Domain," or the mapmaker of your own career.

He offers more than just tips to getting the job interview or getting the raise. With each chapter he offers thought-provoking questions and interactive exercises for the reader to begin their road to success. With the book even comes an offer for a 1/2 hour free consultation with a real-live career coach.

Great book! Easy read, with great case studies of real people who have benefited from Gordon's coaching services. He also offers an interactive Web site,... for career tips and resources outside of the book itself.

4.0 out of 5 stars Empowering!!, May 18, 2001
This review is from: The Career Coach Winning Strategies for Getting Ahead in Today's Job Market (Hardcover)
I'm currently seeking employment and let me tell ya....this book is GREAT, not only for me but for those already in the workforce. I also appreciated at the end of each chapter, there is "reflection" time. Lokoing into one's self is a good thing and Gordon helps you do that. This book can help if you choose to read it. Way to go Gordon for getting my attention AND keeping it!

Well, somebody finally got it right. It covers all the bases, from the exercises at the end of chapters to the projections of the fastest growing occupations. Read (and memorize if possible) Chapter 5--Reinvent Yourself: Think Like a Change Agent. It's the key to the future.

I haven't finished this yet, but so far he has talked of advising several people to get high-tech certifications or training, and said that this has led them to better, more lucrative jobs where employers value them tremendously. Maybe when he was writing this that was a truism, but no longer. He also states early on that you do not necessarily need training, that companies are looking for bright people that they will train or who will learn on the job. Bull. Companies are looking for people with specializations and ever-narrowing skill sets. I can't imagine why this got published this March, given current economic conditions, especially in the high-tech marketplace. The advice about networking given so far seems to have its roots in common sense, but the unending prosperity of the job market that he writes about, and the employee-driven marketplace he mentions, have receded to the realm of fiction.

I just finished reading this book. I thought it hit the bullseye! I'm not sure what book T from Denver read because his comments are totally off the mark. Maybe he's experiencing a lack of oxygen living in the "mile-high" city. Sure, the economy has turned down, but the unemployment rate is still less than 5% (full employment). Contrary to all the news about layoffs, lots of companies are still hiring. Miller's point....new times demand new tactics. You can't just shoot out a resume and expect to land that great job. I used the author's advice, sent out a job proposal, and just landed a terrific job.

4.0 out of 5 stars Helpful, if Somewhat Dated, Advice, July 9, 2008
This review is from: The Career Coach Winning Strategies for Getting Ahead in Today's Job Market (Hardcover)
Since "The Career Coach" is now seven years old, many of the "hottest fields" in the book have now come and gone. Also, the job market isn't quite as optimistic as it was in early 2001, so take some of the recommendations with a grain of salt. If you can ignore that, though, you will find some great exercises to help you market yourself to prospective employers. There are plenty of sample career maps, resumes, and job "proposals" to help you land the job that you want.

5.0 out of 5 stars Right on target!, January 24, 2003
This review is from: The Career Coach Winning Strategies for Getting Ahead in Today's Job Market (Hardcover)
What I really like about this book are the comprehensive exercises at the end of each chapter. They really helped me gain some clarity on how to approach this tough job market. Plus, they gave me a step-by-step game plan on how to win my next position. Finally, the book is written in a easy-to-get style that really sings!

3.0 out of 5 stars Nothing new, but the basics are always helpful., November 8, 2002
This review is from: The Career Coach Winning Strategies for Getting Ahead in Today's Job Market (Hardcover)
Don't pay a lot for this one. If it appeared as an article in a magazine, you'd say it was helpful. As a book, it loses some value.
