Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

We're delighted to be publishing Jo's fourth title with our company as she breathes new life into her now "classic" text on the subject of careers for expat spouses. From the Author

Since I first conceived this book, back in 1996, in Stavanger, Norway, I have watched the idea of a career in your suitcase evolve, pick up speed and grow into what I consider to be the number one solution to the dual career problem. It has been well over ten years now and many people, from all over the world have inspired me and added to my vision. However, one person in particular has to be held responsible for this book. Back in 1996, Kit Prendergast asked me to tell the members of the professional women's group she chaired about the career I had sustained while I had lived abroad in three different countries. She then encouraged me to develop my knowledge into the first ever Career in Your Suitcase workshop. Kit made me believe I had something to say. She gave value to my experiences.

The input and support of this book's contributors and all the people who have shared their secrets with me over the years have enriched this publication. Rather than take the wisdom and experiences of others and put them into my own writing style, I have instead chosen to publish their work in their own voices. With two men on the team as well as American, British and Canadian contributors, the range of styles is evident.

I would like to thank The Expatriate Archive Centre in The Hague, for allowing me to use material from the transcripts of two digital recordings. Thanks too to The Permits Foundation for their input regarding work permits and to The Trailing Spouse, ORC Worldwide and GMAC for their surveys. The Expatriate Archive Centre, The Trailing Spouse, Career-in-your-suitcase.com and CareerByChoice.com provided many pertinent quotations but the majority came from the mentors and bloggers at ExpatWomen.com and my gratitude goes to Andrea Martins who sourced them for me. Thanks too to Going Global, NetExpat, HR-Sense and Be Clear for their contributions regarding CVs, interviews and presentation skills, respectively. Most of all, I would like to thank Galen Tinder, REA Manager, for his tremendous contribution and advice on every chapter of the second edition of this book and his continued dedication to this, the third, updated, edition. As an American with over 25 years experience in human services, who currently works as a senior manager and career consultant for this book's sponsor, Ricklin-Echikson Associates (REA), Galen's input has been invaluable.

Inevitably, I give huge thanks to my husband, Ian, for making my career in my suitcase possible in the first place. I have immense gratitude to my children, Sam and Josh, for respecting the fact that I often work from home and for always being supportive. But it is my parents, Peter and Jenny Gosling, who have believed in me and shown their pride in even my smallest achievement, since the day I was born. And that has made all the difference.

More About the Author

My first book was accepted by the first publisher I approached, back in 1984. The book was 'French Tarts' and the publisher was Octopus. I went on to have 13 word processing and desktop publishing handbooks published by Macmillan, McGraw-Hill, Pitman and Paradigm, over the next few years. By then I had become an 'expat wife' and was living in Dubai. In 1993 we were posted to Oman, Word had become the only WP program and so my other work dried up. Inspired by the landscape and produce of Oman I decided to co-author another cookbook and create Summertime Publishing in order to do it myself. 'Dates' sold thousands of copies but in 1996 we were posted to Norway. Here, I realised my decade abroad had taught me much about expat life and portable careers. Summertime published 'Forced to Fly' and 'Career in Your Suitcase'. I had become an expat expert and my career as a journalist specialising in expat issues and speaker at international conferences took off.

In 1997 we returned to England for a while and I published 'Find Your Passion' and 'Grow Your Own Networks'. In 2005 we moved to the Netherlands and I returned to traditional publishing and new editions of 'Find Your Passion' and 'Career in Your Suitcase' were published by Lean Marketing Press and 'Dates' by Zodiac. In addition LMP published my books 'Release the Book Within' and 'Expat Entrepreneur'.

Today, I'm still in Holland and Summertime Publishing is back on full throttle, not only as a publisher but also as a complete mentoring and publishing service. In March I published my poetry memoir, 'A Moving Landscape' and have now begun publishing other people's books too.

I had a chance to read Jo Parfitt's book on recent Med Cruise. I then met her during a side trip of the cruise in Amsterdam which is where I did the video review. If you are an expat or want to be a productive and profitable expat Jo's book is THE starting place.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just for "ex-pats", May 30, 2011
This review is from: A Career in Your Suitcase: third edition (Paperback)
I use this book alot with international clients who aren't authorized to work in the United States... although it was initially written for American "trailing spouses" who were living abroad. An added feature is that we often think of the relocated spouse as a women. This book addresses the relocating male and his special issues associated with following a career wife. I think it is an excellent book for anyone considering a portable career. It takes the reader through the traditional career assessment exercises then offers practical ideas, strategies and resources for starting a career that can be sustained where ever you live.

5.0 out of 5 stars An essential manual for the career-minded 'trailing spouse'!, February 8, 2011
This review is from: A Career in Your Suitcase: third edition (Paperback)
How can you forge a fulfilling career overseas if you are the `trailing spouse'? What if your former occupation and credentials just aren't recognized in your new country? And if you do find a job what happens to all your hard work when you have to move on again?

A Career in Your Suitcase describes itself as `the definitive expat career bible' and this is no idle boast.

Jo Parfitt is a one-woman industry when it comes to expatriate matters and has used her own experiences to create a successful, multi-faceted and portable career as a writer, publisher, speaker and mentor, and in her own words, she just wants to `share what she knows to help others grow'. And she does this with refreshing aplomb.

Creative tips are combined with practical tools to help you identify your passions and accomplish career goals no matter where in the world you find yourself. And in conjunction with all this, there are tons of useful websites listed throughout.

What you get is not some woolly self-help guide, but a very readable, yet practical instruction manual packed full of imaginative ideas and essential information about creating professional CVs, the art of networking, successful job hunting and much much more.

Whatever your passions are, or even if you haven't discovered them yet, this book will help you find them. But make no mistake, it's not for the half-hearted so if you're still enjoying the freedom from work and the delights of your new culture then don't put down your copy of HELLO just yet...

But if you're self-motivated and serious about rediscovering your professional identity abroad, and you want to create and develop a fulfilling but portable occupation, then A Career in Your Suitcase will give you an excellent return on your investment.
