Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Many of the more than nine million women business owners today have succeeded, according to Moore, because they learned how to manage their careers early, even before they started their own businesses. Using examples of businesses that have received national acclaim from the media and other organizations (such as the A.D. Morgan construction company, Advanced Tissues Sciences and Suzy's Zoo greeting cards), Moore reveals that these women have rarely stayed in one linear career path within a corporation, and that they are often closet inventors and risk takers. An entrepreneur professor at the Citadel, Moore provides a self-assessment quiz that allows would-be business owners to evaluate themselves on the same terms to see whether or not they're ready to start their own companies. She explains how entrepreneurs need to maximize their skills, particularly in managing people and negotiating, offering helpful negotiating strategies and a checklist of objectives. A key step in the negotiating process, according to Moore, is to see the situation from the other person's point of view after establishing one's own position. While her book offers a compelling look at the personalities of entrepreneurs, the book includes a haphazard mix of anecdotes and analysis that make it less helpful for readers looking for hands-on practical advice. From Booklist

Moore, an academic and journalist, takes us inside the lives of more than 100 women entrepreneurs to understand the requirements for a successful self-managed career. Through her extensive interviewing process, she discovers that the common characteristics in this high-achieving group are a good education, working experience in corporate environments, learning on the job, and effective skills as a manager developed through networks and teams. The common thread throughout is hard work. Moore does not minimize the challenges these women had to overcome to reach their goals, but at the same time she uses their history and experiences to prove that opportunities do exist and can be achieved by others. She offers strategies, tools, and exercises to help women develop portable skills, knowledge, meaningful work, networks, and personal responsibility--in short, what she believes it takes to build a thriving career and business. She emphasizes that "success seldom comes easily." Mary Whaley

5.0 out of 5 stars A Roadmap to Success, October 5, 2000

This review is from: Careerpreneurs: Lessons from Leading Women Entrepreneurs on Building a Career Without Boundaries (Hardcover)
Dr. Moore's Careerpreneurs...is an outstanding, clearly written treasury of information. The author interviewed over 100 women entrepreneurs--most of whom have been recognized for their achievements by organizations such as Working Women, the National Association of Women Business Owners, Al Gore's Hammer Award, Crain's Award, and as Entrepreneur of the Year in their city and state--to provide a realistic picture of how transitions can lead to a challenging and rewarding career. Using the women's voices and documented research studies, Dr. Moore provides a roadmap for successfully navigating one's career and thus offers a valuable resource for all professional women.

Each chapter is designed to provide personal insight on successful careerbuilding strategies including transitions, leadership and management style, and negotitating techniques. Many of the chapters include self-assessment exercises (e.g., entrepreneurial style, strategies for coping with conflict), and guidelines for handling specific situations (e.g., designing a transition strategy, a four-step plan to analyze the financial feasibility of starting a business).

This is a book that will be useful to organizational women, to those considering entrepreneurship, just starting out or for those without a mentor. The book serves as a valuable reference guide and you will find yourself returning to it time and again as you meet new challenges in growing and developing your career. For more established entrepreneurs, it will spark ideas on new ways to do business and cause you to re-examine and re-think current strategies that may be holding you back from further expansion. You'll finding the chapter on "Growth, Transition and Success" to be especially helpful.

Moreover, the book is inspirational as it contains honest accounts of how these women struggled and overcame barriers to achieve success. The scenarios in the book provide snapshots of the vaired roads to success. Among the role models you will meet are Suzy Spafford, CEO of Suzy's Zoo greeting cards and stationery, and Deborah Szekely, founder of Rancho La Puerta, the Golden Door, and Eureka Communities. If you want to break the glass ceiling and follow your passion, this book will provide the guidance, information, and inspiration you need.

In lively and engaging prose, Dorothy Perrin Moore examines the career strategies of successful women business owners and managers. Using recent research and her own case studies, Moore emphasizes building a career by networking with others and employing a team-oriented management style. The book is laden with good advice and links to additional resources. I highly recommend it to people interested in taking charge of their own careers

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book!, September 25, 2000

I agree with Janet from Lexington, this is a must read! The information on organizational transitions matches everything I've seen working for a Fortune 500 Company on Wall Street. Especially helpful were the ideas on developing a strategy for transition and measuring success. I shared this with all of my co-workers, male and female.

The quotes from successful women really hit home. One in particular hit a key for me: "An elephant gets more attention than a mouse. But if the mouse is the leader of company... the mouse needs to learn how to manage the elephant. We manage at least one elephant per day." So true! What manager out there has never felt like that mouse?

The chapter on networking has helped me better understand how to support my customers and co-workers. Working for a company that is a leader in providing equal opportunities for everyone, I assumed that women would have equal access to strong networks and mentors. As I dug into this further, I found that, indeed, there are stark differences in how men and women can approach making and maintaining these contacts. We are now working in my department to break down this barrier so we can retain the talented women who keep leaving when the doors are closed!

While targeted for women entrepreneurs, Careerpreneurs provides an excellent resource for men and women in entrepreneurial ventures as well as large organizations.
