Grade 7-12-- Two books that focus on jobs for people who are, respectively, creativewith their hands or research-oriented. Both are clear, easy to read, and interesting, summarizing 14 careers plus a list of 12 related possibilities. The overviews are related in a personalized format, as people in these occupations offer job descriptions, tell how they began and how they feel about their work, and share advice and potential salaries. The variety is wide. Curious includes an anthropologist, a management consultant, a detective, an ethnobotanist, and an antique dealer. Hands-On Types describes the work of a cabinetmaker, tailor, chef, glass artist, and videotape editor. The good-quality supporting black-and-white photographs show men and women actively involved in their work. A list of related organizations is appended, as are some titles for further reading (with a few entries dating from the early to mid '80s). These books are sensible starting places for career exploration, outlining the diverse options within specific areas and demonstrating the unique paths people often take.
