5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable resource for someone considering a career in fundraising
A previous poster commented that this book was helpful for the person who knew little to nothing about careers in fundraising. I could not disagree more. It used to be that people fell into fundraising mid-career after "doing something else." Today, more and more people are choosing fundraising as a career and as the field grows and develops, so does the need for...

Although the first few pages were interesting with a bit of philosophy and history. For the most part, this book would be of interest for those who had never heard of fund raising or non profits. Most of it is devoted to telling the reader about training/education they need before they can be accepted by this lofty profession. There is frequent reference to people...

5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable resource for someone considering a career in fundraising, June 30, 2006

A previous poster commented that this book was helpful for the person who knew little to nothing about careers in fundraising. I could not disagree more. It used to be that people fell into fundraising mid-career after "doing something else." Today, more and more people are choosing fundraising as a career and as the field grows and develops, so does the need for professional/career resources. As a development officer, there is so much more to fundraising than asking for money. This book does an excellent job of answering questions that someone considering a career in fundraising may have, while providing practical and proven advice for those who already work on the development field. Not only have I used this book in my own professional like, I have and will continue to recommend it to others.

4.0 out of 5 stars A valuable guide to this profession, June 30, 2006
This review is from: Careers in Fundraising (AFP/Wiley Fund Development Series) (The AFP/Wiley Fund Development Series) (Paperback)
After reading Careers in Fund Raising, I've recommended it to numerous people considering beginning or changing their careers to become nonprofit professionals. In fact, I've given copies to a number of people, who've reported it extremely helpful. The author's background as both a fundraiser and instructor offers a well-informed perspective. In addition to knowledge of the sector, Wagner provides a sense of the traits and skills that help to make a good fundraiser. It's a valuable resource - and an enjoyable read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have, July 2, 2006

This book takes the reader from an understanding of how fundraising fits into today's world to concrete suggestions on how to be the best professional.

The book is very valuable for anyone thinking of entering the field. The resources, most of which remain relevant even with the passing of time, are quite helpful.

Not just for the beginner. This book helped me think about how to handle the stress of the job - good suggestions on the topic.

As someone wanting to change careers, I found several chapters applicable to my situation, both in the how-to and the possibilities for employment.

Even if this book gets out of date, the references and referrals it makes will remain relevant for quite some time.

The first few chapters were particularly interesting and succint in delving into the U.S. traditions of the fundraising profession.

While this book doesn't provide all the answers, it does provide a great foundation for further discussion with mentors, peers, and even my colleagues.

Reading this book makes me think I'm part of a great profession!

5.0 out of 5 stars A "Must Read" for all Fundraising Professionals, July 19, 2006
This review is from: Careers in Fundraising (AFP/Wiley Fund Development Series) (The AFP/Wiley Fund Development Series) (Paperback)
Dr. Wagner first begins by providing the reader with an understanding of how fundraising fits into today's world and then she transitions into suggestions on how to be the best all-around professional in your field. Over time the material in this book will continue to be helpful and can serve the interest of people at all levels of fundraising, as well as professional outside the field. This is an inspirational book that is extremely thought provoking and no professional should go without reading!

5.0 out of 5 stars Must have for fund raising professionals, July 17, 2006
This review is from: Careers in Fundraising (AFP/Wiley Fund Development Series) (The AFP/Wiley Fund Development Series) (Paperback)
This is my favorite book to give to new fund raisers or people considering fund raising as a career.

Dr. Wagner's book is insightful. From understanding the history of fund raising and philanthropy to finding the right job, this book examines the major topics one should consider when considering a career in fund raising.

The book won the Skystone Ryan Prize for research on fundraising and philanthropy for good reason.

5.0 out of 5 stars Required reading!, July 13, 2006
This review is from: Careers in Fundraising (AFP/Wiley Fund Development Series) (The AFP/Wiley Fund Development Series) (Paperback)
One thought that struck me as I read this book is that I wish it had been available when I made a career switch several years ago. I recommend it to individuals who engage me for career networking interviews. It also provides a good uplift to professionals already in the field - the numerous resources are worth the price of the book alone! The book is very readable and full of wonderful advice and wisdom - a trademark of the author.

Ms. Wagner does an excellent job on helping the reader understand how fundraising fits into the world today, including concrete suggestions on how to be the best professional. By enlisting other experts in the field, Ms. Wager taps into a wealth of information that expands her own understanding and expertise. I first purchased this book as someone who was in the middle of a career change. I was able to use the information in this book to help identify the direction I wanted to take. As I am now looking into the next phase of my career, I am using tapping into the information in this book to help as I plan my next steps.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone either entering into, or already in, the fundraising profession.

This is a great book for all fund raisers, not just for those new into the field. This book helped guide me through some stressful times on the job. It has good suggestions on careers in fund raising. It is also easy to read. This is a nice benefit since I read a few chapters at a time as time permitted.

Reading this book helps me appreciate our great profession as fund raisers.
