Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 7-12-- Two series entries that give a glimpse of the career opportunities available within the targeted fields. Each title briefly describes 14 jobs and a dozen related career choices. People Who Like People presents a wide variety of options, such as psychologist, convention organizer, city councilman, flight attendant, and video-store owner. People Who Like to Perform covers an array of professions such as juggler, rock musician, talk-show host, pastor, and teacher. Both books introduce people involved in each occupation. In clear, interesting accounts they describe their jobs, tell how they began, share their feelings, give advice, and discuss possible salary ranges. The colorful covers and fair-to-good black-and-white photos add appeal. A useful list of organizations to contact for more information is appended. One shortcoming is that the titles included for further reading date from the '60s, '70s, and early '80s. The books' best feature is that they show the unusual paths people often take to reach their optimum careers. Young adults can gain assurance that even when first, second, or even subsequent choices aren't ``it,'' with luck, dedication, and preseverence, the right one will follow down the line. --Diane P.
