3.0 out of 5 stars Not wide enough for my Bathtub!!!
I bought two of these rails. However, they are too narrow for my tub. I needed one that would widen to 6 inches, but these only widen to 5 inches. Unfortunately, I am stuck with them since I didn't get a chance (due to medical problems) to send them back.

They do look like they are of good quality. Sure wish they would have fit. Amazon should have said...

We recently ordered a Carex Bathtub rail from Medical Department Stores.com. Our tub is a 50 year old American Standard covered with an acrylic liner during a remodel. We needed a rail that would expand to 7 inches and that would have plates large enough to distribute the pressure over a wider area to avoid cracking the acrylic. The Carex seemed to fit those parameters. I'm guessing the Carex model was out of stock as we received a Medline model (same manufacturer) in it's place. The Medline was well made but didn't fit our tub. I emailed Medical Department Stores and received a prompt reply. The next day I was contacted by phone. The customer service rep was very helpful, suggesting a model made by Drive Medical might work. She went into the warehouse to get one, opened it and took measurements to be sure it would fit our tub. It was shipped the same day along with a prepaid return label for the Medline. The Drive model has wide plates, expands to easily fit over our tub side and has an adjustable height, non slip grip--a nice feature I don't recall seeing on many other models. As my husband recently had major back surgery we rely on the rail for safe entry and exit into the tub. Great product and really great customer service!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent quality & adaptability, June 9, 2008

I was a bit skeptical about the stength and quality of the holder. But other users' comment encouraged me to get one and try to help my mom get in and out of a tub after her surgery. The holder fits perfectly well to the both sides and proved to be extremely sturdy. The only potential issue is the way the shower curtains go around the holder. So, whie you are taking a shower, you may not have easy access to the holder since it's covered by the curtain, which means you may need another holder to grab (I placed another grabber on the wall). But, overall, the holder proved to be most useful and worth every penny.

I bought two of these for my 83 year old dad who was having trouble getting in and out of the bathtub, which is quite high. He anchors himself with these and now has no problems bathing by humself. A lifesaver. Easy to install and quite sturdy and reasonably priced. A++++++

I bought this for my mom, the cost was good. I wasn't sure if it would really work because it just holds nice and tight on the tub based on how well you tighten it. I was thinking you would need something that screws into a wall or something for it to be more sturdy. But, it was very solid and helped my mom. She has absolutly no balance and totally relies on various things to hold her up - it works.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to Use, January 28, 2012

I bought two of these hand rails to help my elderly mother get in and out of the bathtub. They are so easy to install and remove and are very sturdy. The fact that they are more comfortable for the hands as opposed to horizontal side rails makes all the difference in the world. The price was also great-- almost half the cost as opposed to a local medical supply company.

We recently purchased a walk in bathtub. My husband, who has Parkinson's needed more assistance than the one grab bar that was installed in the unit. He needed something to hold on to as he was preparing to enter the tub as well as something to pull up on when he was ready to exit. This unit was perfect. We attached it to the door of the tub. It is not bulky and has enough height to fill both of his needs. It is extremely secure without damaging the tub finish. We would recommend this to any one who needs help entering and leaving a conventional tub or a walk-in.

2.0 out of 5 stars Didn't fit 5.5" tub, December 20, 2011

This feels like a heavy duty product, but it wouldn't fit the 5.5" side of the tub. You couldn't get the pads to come even close to full contact with the side of the tub, so the unit slips side to side and back and forth. Even with the product dimensions shown of 7.8 x 6.2 x 20.5, it couldn't be adjusted to fit. Even if it had fit, I'm not sure that the vertical orientation of the adjusting bolt is as effective as the ones on the side. But I could be wrong about that. Others seem to be satisfied with it.

Another rail that we tried, the 'AquaSense Bathtub Safety Rail with Steel Construction' is in my opinion a superior product. It's heavy duty, finished well, holds tight and has the capacity to fit an even wider tub.

We also tried the 'AquaSense Multi adjust Rail' which provides for adjustment of both the height and orientation (perpendicular or parallel to the tub side), but there is some play in the vertical rail at the adjustment point.

I am giving this product two stars because of the misleading product dimensions shown.

Anyway, if you need a rail that goes beyond 5 inches, don't buy these.

4.0 out of 5 stars Does the job I bought it for., October 21, 2011

This product attached to the sides of my tile bathtub/shower with little problem. I used extra rubber padding on each side however as I was concerned about cracking the tiles. But I believe it would have worked just as well without it. It may be a bit difficult to someone with limited hand strength to tighten the screw down sufficiently, but the head is large and most people should have no problem.

My mother, for whom the rail was installed, feels much more secure getting in and out of the tub now.

We have a fiberglass bathtub stall, and this is the only bathtub safety rail I found that says it's OK to use with fiberglass. I'm so relieved that it works just fine. It's an even bigger help than I expected, and took less than a minute to install.
