I like these shorts, but the fabric is lighter weight than expected, ie there is a bit more definition to the privates showing through the fabric than I prefer if you know what I mean. I didn't know fabric weights before I ordered these and now that I have tried these on I would go for something more in the 8.5oz instead of the 7.5oz next time I order. It's not so bad that I would return them, but I don't think I would order them for work shorts again. I'm not sure how well they will hold up to hard outdoor use. They look nice for casual wear, falling right across my kneecap on my 6'5" frame and will hold up ok for yard work etc, but daily heavy brush clearing or construction work is probably outside of these shorts intended design. I think they will be very comfortable in my blazing hot central Texas summer though.
I have already run them through the wash and feel confident that the velcro pocket flaps are not going to start curing up which is common on a lot of shorts. The pockets are appropriately sized for wallet, cash/coin and phone. The slash thigh pocket closes well with the velcro over my HTC-EVO phone so it should also work with a I-Phone. If that's not good enough the flap pockets also close securely. It's typical Carhartt quality and design. Much higher quality and design than say Duluth Trading Co. clothing IMHO.
In summary, I'll keep them and I'm sure I will be very happy with them.

I have a hard time finding shorts that are long enough to hit my knees. These are the ticket and they are Carhartt so they will last a long time.

The shorts are what I expected, given past experience with carhartt. The other reviewer was right about it being long enough for tall guys. I am pretty tall, and the length is perfect in that it covers my legs all the way to the knees, but not below. I carry a limited number of tools, and a telephone, and constantly get in and out of a vehicle, for my job and these have very well designed pockets for carrying a few hand tools, out of the way so they don't stab the truck seat. The truly unique and excellent features of carhartt are attention to detail, and sparing no expense for quality. However, I hope I haven't spoken too soon, as we shall see how long they last.

All in all, these are nice shorts.

As others have pointed out, they are LONG, so be prepared for that. And they are not as heavy weight as typical Carhartt trousers so be prepared for that, too.

They fit well and look good. I like the pockets and loops.

The only thing I am not crazy about is the phone pocket. I much prefer the one on the pants and shorts by Dickies as it's isolated from the other pockets and is in a just the perfect spot to protect the phone but keep it handy. On these shorts, the phone pocket is in with the other pockets and is not as convenient as the Dickies pocket.

My husband goes through shorts like water, granted he a select few pairs in rotations daily, but he always seems to get tears in them around the knees from bending or kneeling. These shorts by Carhartt are awesome. The material is super thick and tear resistant, and the fit is nice --- not to baggy, not too slim. The length is great on my 5'10" husband, falling just below the knee. He has these in 3 colors now.

I loved everything about these shorts. They fit great (just the right length) and they look great as well. I definitely would recommend these shorts to everyone as they are comfortable to be in no matter the occasion.

I bought these shorts because of the inseam length. I have long legs, and the standard men's shorts(inseams between 9 & 11 inches), leave a lot of my thighs exposed. The best shorts I have, are 2 pairs of cargo pants, that shrunk(in length) to the point where I took them to a tailor, and had the inseam cut down to 15". Now they come down to mid-knee cap, which is a bit long. These shorts have a 13" inseam, which is just about perfect, but the waist is very loose, and I have to wear a belt with them, or within an hour, or so, I would look like a kid with his underwear hanging out. The bigger problem, though, is that the cargo pockets are cut at angles, with velcro closures, which makes it easy to keep things from falling out, but not so easy to remove things(like when your phone is ringing). Because of the length, I thought these shorts would be the answer, for me, but I'll have to keep looking.

Great price and they look tough enough for an 18 year old who likes to wear them mudding!! Totally recommend!

I have been a fan of Columbia shorts for decades but will no longer buy them because of the snap closure they have started using lately. I am 6'5", 260 lbs and they snap open at the first sign of pressure. Unacceptable. I bought three pairs of these Carhartt Utility Shorts last summer and wear them constantly when I am not at work. One year later, they still look great and show visible signs of wear. I am buying three more pairs now and am going to Goodwill with all of my "back-up" Columbia shorts. I am a convert and see no reason to look for any other shorts. These are great!

Pros:

Good fit. I'm 5'9" and 160 lbs. and the 30" waist fit me fine. It's a bit more loose than the average shorts, and the length is ideal for covering the knee and not flashing people when you sit down.

Great material. Durable, yet also comfortable and ergonomic.

Handy cargo pocket design makes them readily accessible but unlikely to drop things.

Cons:

The pockets have a bunch of useless sub-pockets.
