As a lineman by trade, I climb poles and towers almost daily. Additionally, I use chainsaws, jackhammers, and dig trenches often, too. These pants are exactly what I was looking for to handle those tasks. They are very heavy duty, but light-feeling. The double-front reinforced knee area is a much needed feature for me. The cargo pockets are awesome to hold gloves, pens, tape measure, and my cell phone.

They are the best money I have ever spent on work pants. My girlfriend says they look good on me, too.

I will never wear or buy cotton blue jeans for work again.

PS: I forgot to mention, I ride motorcycles daily, too, usually to and from work. These make fine riding pants, as well.. and block the wind nicely. Small pebbles and insects that strike my legs frequently are barely felt. It's a good look, too, in black, for riding.

Size warning: Order the waist one or two sizes larger than your normal pants. They (and strangely, most Carhartt products) always run a size or two small in the waist. Either that, or my gut is one or two sizes bigger than I thought.

So I read multiple reviews for these Carhartt pants and the Wrangler Riggs as I was trying to find some Cargo Pants to replace the Levi's I've been wearing the last 4 years that sadly, Levi's doesn't make in my size or colors beyond khaki. So I bought a pair of these and a pair of the Wrangler Riggs. The pants seem to fit well, however the cargo pockets on the legs feel as though they were sewn on as an afterthought. They are snug to the pant-leg with no relief. I carry my wallet and cell phone in my leg pockets on my Levi's and even on the Riggs the pockets both have extra fabric folds, or reliefs, that allow the pocket to expand out comfortably and functionally. The Carhartts however held my wallet and phone snug to my leg to a degree of discomfort making them really more decoration than utility. They aren't bad pants, just they lack the "cargo pant" feel with the pockets they put on the legs.

First of all let me assure those nay-sayers, I don't give a 5 star rating lightly. I'm a field biologist and have tried scores of outerwear pants over the years. True these pants aren't cheap, but nothing of quality is cheap. My review doesn't factor in cost....I need quality & comfort in the field, and am more than willing to spend $45-60 per pant to get it.

These pants not only look great no matter what you might be doing on a given day, but they are indeed very rugged pants and definitely withstand ripping & puncturing. I've taken these through very thick blackberries, prickly ash, and inadvertently swiped barbed wire with some force without feeling a thing or scuffing/tearing the pants. I've only had them for a couple months, so my 5-star rating is provisional pending another 12 months testing in the field, but so far they've withstood the worst I can throw at them and still holding up and protecting me.

These pants also seem to be fairly good at shielding from cold winds with the tight ripstop weave.

Thus far shrinkage from washing has been minimal, thus doesn't look like that will be an issue. These pants, as well as the dark chocolate I've purchased, also seem to be relatively color fast, although I expect after many more washings, wear & tear over time, and depending on your water hardness, might well show fading in the future, especially along hard & worn edges.

The pants have very easy access pockets (thanks Carhart)....none of that velcro crap for this field guru. Snaps on side pockets are easy to open and close. Cell phone pocket is perfectly sized for iPod and most cell phones and I've had no problems with phone popping out of the pocket no matter what I'm doing.

These are fairly nice cargo pants, a bit on the expensive side for me but nice quality for the money. The sizing which everyone is complaining about I believe is due to vanity sizing which a lot of manufactures are doing these days because people are getting much heavier. These pants run actually a little big, for all of those people out there who want to figure out what size to buy take a measuring tape and put it around your waist and that is your size. I recommend these cargo pants they seem pretty durable like others have mentioned these don't have the baggy cargo pockets so you can't get a whole lot in there but my wallet fits just fine.

This is a review of Carhartts Cotton Ripstop Pants. I purchased two pairs of these pants several weeks ago. I was looking for a good pair of work pants with extra pocket space for carrying everyday items. The cargo pockets were just what I was looking for. These pants are 100% cotton so shrinkage was a concern. I ordered them one waist size larger than I normally wear just in case. When the pants arrived I found them to be extremely well constructed. The knees and thighs are double thick fabric. The pockets are heavily stitched and re-enforced with metal rivets. The cargo pockets snap closed with heavy duty metal snaps. The sizing turned out to be true to size. I washed and dried them and found little to no shrinkage. I wear them everyday to work. I regularly crawl on my knees. The pants are showing no significant signs of wear. The best thing about these pants is all of the pocket space. They have the four regular pants pockets, two in front and two in back. They also have two deep cargo pockets on the thighs with lots of room for extra items. I can easily fit a bottle of water into them. I reguarly carry a camera and there is plenty of room for that also. In addition there is a cell phone pocket on the left thigh. My LG phone fits perfectly into it. It's located in just the right spot where you don't even know it's there. On the right thigh there is a pen and pencil pocket. I keep a sharpie, pen and pen-light on me at all times. The pocket holds them securely and its so nice to always have these items at the ready. These pants are exactly what I was looking for. I reccommend them highly to any one looking for a great pair of work pants.
