Bought this for a gift for Christmas and they just loved it nice and warm for the cold weather in PA.
I got this as a Christmas gift for my dad, he said once he broke it in he absolutely loved it and it was very warm.
It was exactly what he wanted and it fit great, just like the suggested size chart!

I just bought my second Carhartt Men's Detroit Duck Jacket after a great run with my first. If you are a first time buyer, there are a few things you may want to know about this particular coat. The coat sits just at the waist to accommodate a tool belt. This is a great detail, but some may say that it is a bit "short". If you are taller, look into the "tall" version of this jacket. They are true to size - this is not meant to be a "baggy" coat, although the sleeves to have some extra material and gusseting to facilitate better arm movement. Since I last bought this coat there have been a few minor changes:
-Sizing is done on a SM, M, L, XL basis rather than chest measurement. Check on the Carhartt website for measurements.
-The duck seems a bit improved. It is less stiff when it is new and seems a bit lighter (though no less sturdy)
-Last one was made in Mexico, this one was union made in the USA

My husband ordered this jacket to use as a medium-weight jacket, before the weather turns extremely cold. It's a very good fit, leaving room for sweaters or sweatshirts to be worn underneath. The sleeves run quite loose, so a heavy sweatshirt will fit underneath quite well. The fabric is rather stiff when new, so washing it does soften it up. The jacket will probably get more and more comfortable as it is worn and washed. I was impressed by the workmanship and the quality of the fabric, which are hard to find these days.

I purchased mine directly from Carhartt. I would have purchased on Amazon but NOT ONE review that I read was helpful to me. Hopefully mine clears a few things up:

I am a 5' 10 1/2" 220 lb male with a gut. I own at least 20 Carhartt jackets in size XL Reg. The only exception is the J233 sherpa lined denim jacket. I need a XXL Reg in those because the waist is small and they run short.

    SAME WITH THIS MODEL !

If you normally buy an XL Reg in Carhartt and are LEAN OR TONE in the torso you buy your REGULAR size. If you are an XL Reg but have a gut and a non athletic build GO UP ONE SIZE....NOT TALL just ONE regular size up. It will be a little looser but also give you just a little more length in the torso (not much). You will need to wash and shrink a little before it fits a little tighter.

    Quality ?

Sorry folks but not the most durable of the Carhartt jackets that I own. The "look" is rough and tough but the actual jacket is rather thin and equal to a medium weight denim jacket. My Wrangler blanket lined jacket that I purchased for $37 blows this jacket away as far as quality goes and I am a die hard Carhartt fan. Just telling it like it is.

My husband works in residential construction, and needed a jacket that was warm, but not too bulky. He has always loved the Carhartt brand, but was unfamiliar with this jacket. I ordered for him as a Christmas gift, and he LOVES it! The short waist length does allow room for his tool belt, and the adjustable snaps on the sleeves keep the sleeve fitting snug over his wrists. My husband is 5'9 and around 210 lbs and the size Large fits him perfect. I'd definitely recommend this jacket.

This was my first Carhartt. Pulling the jacket out of the package, its material and build quality were apparent. Looks clean and rugged. But...
The sizing chart is completely inaccurate, actual fit has very little to do with chest size. To be helpful to first time buyers who dont have the ability to try them locally, I offer the following advice on the chart.

Rather than chest size, Interpret it as an overall body or midsection size, where the letter is a scale or level of obesity. I think they just want to be kind and not insult their target demographic. Broad chested reads much better than....fatty (sorry folks). If we are being honest, and you are in shape and maintain yourself, go 1 to 2 sizes down.

Two things popped out after looking thru the reviews for sizing confirmation.

First - Those very happy with the fit tended to be prior customers who already knew or had been thru sizing, and had a tendency to share their measurements as height and weight. Many seeming to be generously proportioned just like the jacket. Seems to confirm weight is truly the main factor.
Second - there was reference that Carhartt use to be made in chest size vs S, M, L, etc. I would assume they were having issues where someone buying @ chest size could not clear their gut, so it made more sense to go that way as simplify production. And they probably hedge the size in the upward direction.

@ 5'9" 180lb with a 45" chest and 34 waist, I went with the Large as its smack on what their very misleading chart indicated. And I usually have to go larger as most standard garments are tight in the chest. But I am swimming in this thing. I could put on a couple sweaters and hoodie and it would still be loose.

It is a great jacket. It fits well and keeps me warm when I am in cold places. I put it on when I am cold and then I am no longer cold.

When I am warm I take it off and wait to see if I get cold again.
