5.0 out of 5 stars This is it -- long johns for the working guy!, December 28, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
As an engineer, I spend a great deal of time outside, sometimes 4-6 hours a day, regardless of weather. And, I've been doing this for over 25 years. I've seen the cheap underwear fall apart after a couple of years, usually at the cuffs and collars. Stitching will buy you another season but that's it. I wear this stuff from October through April so it gets a good workout.

This underwear is thick! Compared to the average long underwear, like the Covington (a decent, cheap brand), that you can see through, the Carhartt is thick, even thicker than the so-called Duo-Fold brand (also another good brand but more expensive than the Covington.). Although it could be argued that trapped air provides insulation, I doubt it. A thick layer provides better protection than a thin one. If someone you know needs protection from the wind and cold, for work or fun, this is the underwear to buy.

I would recommend this underwear, despite its price because it higher quality and will last longer.

Take care when buying long underwear in general. I usually fit a medium and buy large. Because of shrinkage, I usually go for extra large. With this brand, a large fits well, even after washing in cold water. If you have doubts about the dryer --- most shrinkage occurs in the dryer because static attraction pulls the fibers together (especially bad with wool -- often permanent) --- let the underwear air-dry. Why not? One advantage of winter is dry air, therefore, wet clothes can dry by themselves. I use a coat rack for this drying.

4.0 out of 5 stars Grows on you, January 7, 2011

This review is from: Carhartt Men's Heavyweight Cotton Thermal Crew Neck T-Shirt (Apparel)
No space-age material here! This is innovative winter underwear of a traditional, natural material: tightly woven cotton, half again as heavy as the thickest Beefy Tee. As I avoid dyes next to my skin I chose the "Natural" color, a pleasant off-white that looks...well, natural. The maker's logo in tasteful size appears on the left chest--a mark of pride.

This would work best as a middle layer, in my view, under a shirt and over a moisture-wicking inner layer of polypro or silk.

If you are broad shouldered or have a thick neck you may find this crew neck undershirt binds, but wait a bit. After a few wearings the material actually will adjust itself to your body contours, stretching slightly where needed. The sleeve length is accurate with some extra material to create a longer body length than a standard tee shirt, as another reviewer noted.

The high quality of the fabric ensures there is little shrinkage even after repeated washings.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Thermal, August 19, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I have been searching for awhile for a good thermal. The ones you buy at the fancy department stores have too much stuff all over them and are not quality material most of the time. The ones hanes and jockey, etc. sell are not high enough quality and can be scratchy. This fits great (Large for a 5'10" 170pnd athletic build) and the cotton is very soft. The weave is fairly thick and this will serve well for warmth in the winter and for style in fall and early spring under a t-shirt. Great buy and great product. Well worth my money.

I bought this shirt and the matching pants for my husband, whose other sets of long underwear left something to be desired. At the same time I bought him another brand of long underwear, and he much prefers this set. They are comfortable and warm. I may have to buy him some more!

These have been a lifesaver this winter. Well made and durable, warm and cozy. I had purchased a few other sets of thermal underwear but none come anywhere close to the comfort provided by these. If you are in need of heavy weight thermals, this is the product. Quality will last several seasons.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heavy weight!!, May 22, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
God it is so heavy than it seems your wearing a quilt but strechy. Works well under my long sleeves shirts. Only the logo is a little bit too big and it shows up under my shirt. But great product, well made. It's a classic.
