I bought this as a gift for the grandson and he loves it.
True to fit size and easy to wash while being durable enough to wear to hands on work location.
I did and medium fits perfectly for me, I haven't seen the red jacket in stores though.

Bought this jacket because I needed something warm when I work outside. Decided on this Carhartt and I'm glad I did. I can chop wood and handle all my dirty jobs, while staying warm and not worrying about any tearing or damage to my coat. The duck is extremely tough and the quilted lining inside is so comfy and warm... Overall the quality of this Carhartt is Superior to all and to say the least EXCELLENT!!! I am Extremely Happy to know that I will enjoy this product for many years to come..

The only work jackets that I've tried were Dickies Lined Eisenhower. They're not much better than a sweatshirt in terms of warmth. I lost my last Eisenhower in a customer's car so I needed a new jacket before it got chilly. I did some research and decided to try out the Carhartt J140. When the package arrived, boy was I surprised. This thing was built like a tank and the lining was 3 or 4 times thicker than my old Dickies. Downside was that the pockets are not lined. So weren't the Dickies but I was hoping the Carhartt were. Oh well, maybe I'll sew a liner inside.

The size was really hard to judge before ordering. I'm 5'11" and 170 lbs. I normally wear a Medium jacket from most major active brand wear such as TNF, Marmot, etc. From reading all the reviews, I came to the conclusion that a Small would fit me best. When I tried it on, it was slightly short down the waist, long on the arms (although a welcome length when my arms are out front or up high), puffy around the chest, stomach, and arms, and slightly tight in the armpits. But the armpits were probably due to the thick material that joins four corners kind of like the crotch in a pair of jeans. After wearing it a few times, I didn't notice it at all. There's enough room inside to comfortably wear a sweatshirt underneath. It's almost as big as a typical Large. Maybe between a Medium and Large. Pretty similar in cut to a high school letterman jacket. Definitely made for construction workers, lumber jacks, and vikings. But kidding aside, I'm pretty sure that the extra girth helps with range of motion.

The outter material is somewhat stiff but not as stiff as some people make it out to be. Wear it a couple of times and you won't notice it anymore. Hopefully after a few washes, it'll soften up even more.

It's great to find a quality product made in America. The fact that most of the guys you see working on job-sites with cold weather attests to the quality of these jackets. At 5' 10" and 190 lbs this medium-jacket fits perfect. I normally wear a large jacket but read the reviews here at Amazon and decided to order a medium.

I've owned lots of these type of jackets. I wear out one a year. I keep one to work in and one good one for day to day use. When the cuffs go to hell on them as they do on all of them if you work hard, and the stuffing starts falling out the sleves on my work one I just move the work one to Good Will, my good one to work in and get a new one. Tired of the blah colors my local box stores offer, moss green, brown, or light brown, or grey. I wanted RED, I've owned both Carhartt and Cabella's version of these jackets. This is the first time I've bought one from Amazon. I ordered it from Amazon because my local box stores have limited color variety. I ordered the red one. Then read the reviews of which everyone was complaining about the sizes being too big. I ordered a large, and it I've always gotten large with these jackets. I'm 6'0" 180lbs. Fits me great. Don't order a large if you are 5'0." I say 5 stars.
I read lots of reviews after I already placed my order here, than got nervous as so many said they were swimming in it. telling us all to order a size smaller than you think. That is bunk, If you have used these jackets befoure just order your normal size. If you've never had one of these go to a Farm & Fleet store and try some on till you find your size. Remember that size when ordering from Amazon. My new Large from Amazon is identicle to my other Carhartts I've gotten at local stores.

I am 5'11 tall with 38' chest and normally wear M. But this M is HUGE! I have Carhartt thermal-lined active jacket which is also somewhat large for its size but this one is even bigger. It has enough space for three or four thick sweaters, and probably, you can easily put it on top of your favorite down parka for extra warmth in arctic expeditions.
It's too big around the waist. Unless you have big belly cold air can enter with ease from below. Just like thermal-lined jacket it leaves your neck open, so you'll want something like sweater with high collar or a neck gaiter. If you are about the same size as me, S is surely better.
On the other hand, the rest is warm enough. With sweater you can be comfortable at 0 degrees C, no problem.

I love this jacket. Not only is it comfortable but it's incredibly warm. The hood blocks the wind and keeps the back of your neck warm even when it's down. This jacket is also very resistant to rain, snow, and wind. The sizing is perfect. I'm tall and lanky (6'4", 195 lbs) so I ordered a large tall since large sizes tend to be too short for me and XL is generally too baggy. This jacket fits very comfortably. It seems extremely durable. Time will tell how well it holds up.

UPDATE: This jacket survived 2 long new England winters with little to no visible wear and tear. I expect to have this jacket for a long time and I wear it all the time.
