First, let me say that Carhartt bib overalls are one of those things that I had eyeballed in the store for a long time, but never could bring myself to shell out the cash to buy. I figured I could just dress in layers, and for a long time I did. But I was always cold or hot, and not very comfortable feeling like the "Michelin man". And since I don't work outside full time, these were something I considered a "luxury".

So when I was preparing for an ATV trip in the mountains recently and found out the temperatures were going to be in the low 30s, I knew I had to do something. Layers were just not going to cut it on this trip, and I knew I'd also be getting wet and muddy. A friend suggested that I really needed some lined bib overalls. Coveralls would be too bulky. I considered it, and knew I wanted the Carhartts. I looked at all the camo hunting bibs, but none came remotely close to being this durable.

I bought my bibs and wore them on my trip. It WAS cold that day, but I was NOT. These things are AWESOME!! They kept me warm without being hot, and kept me dry from neck to boot. They had lots of pockets, and wearing them over a thermal shirt but under a jacket was not too bulky. I had lots of "flex" room. They were so comfortable, I almost didn't want to take them off! They were easy to slip on and off, and when I was done I just hosed them down and threw them in the washing machine. They came out nice and clean, which is surprising considering the mud I got on them. The fabric was "broken in" a little, which only made them feel nicer when I put them on.

Now I'll share the lessons I learned, in hopes of saving you some trouble:

    1. Bib overalls are NOT the same as coveralls. Overalls are sized based on your waist/inseam.

I have been putting off purchasing a pair of winter lined bibs for a long time. i finally decided to invest. first thing i have to say is that carhartt sizes run VERY SMALL. i am 5'11" and 175 lbs. my waist size is 34" and the size pants i will purchase is 34x32. i ended up ordering the carhartt size 40x30 bibs and they fit perfect. i went to a store and tried on a pair of 36x30 and i could not get them up around my hips. i then tried on the 38x30 and they fit, but when i bent over, they lacked the room and comfort i was looking for. so i tried on the 40x30 and they had plenty of room when i was bent over and didn't ride up or inhibit my mobility. i have worn these bibs a bunch of times so far while outside snowblowing and shoveling and they kept me plenty warm. i also wore them on a 2 day winter camping trip where i was out in the elements for 2 full days. i was climbing hills that were ice and snow covered. i was on my knees, running chainsaws, climbing and doing all sorts of stuff and my bibs not only kept me warm, but proved to live up to the carhartt durability. they did get wet from the knee down (as any outer layer would) since i was walking through a foot and a half of snow but i found that the lining never stopped keeping me warm. they also dried very easily by the fire. another great thing about them are the pockets. the side pockets are plenty deep and i dont have to worry about my keys or phone falling out of them while i am in the seated position. all in all, i am extremely happy with these bibs.

The quality of this item is very good, the reason I rated it 3 stars is because it is very hard to size these correctly. I've just ordered my third pair, hopefully these will be right. I went to the carhartt website and ordered as they suggested, the first pair was too large, the second too small, I hope the third will be just right. I would suggest you try these on in a store first to get the right size. Amazon's return policy and quick shipping has been top notch, the only thing is I have to return and re-order rather than return for an exchange.

Edit: Well the third pair did not fit me like I would have liked, but it will have to do. Try these on before you buy.

I ordered these for sledding with my kids as I already have a Carhartt jacket (which I love). These overalls are VERY warm and built exceptionally well. I am large, having a size 40 waist, but having read the previous reviews, I knew to order larger. I ordered a size 48...a full 8" bigger than normal...and they are SPOT on. With that being said, the ability to adjust the length is limited, and I ordered a 34" inseam (same as my jeans) and they are slightly too long. I recommend you go and inch or two shorter than your jeans but for the waist it is VITALLY important you order much larger (8' - 10" depending on how much clothing you'll wear underneath).

The quality of the build in these overalls is unparalleled. They are exceedingly durable and, combined with the jacket (available separately), they keep both the cold and the wetness out.

For work or for play, you simply can't go wrong with Carhartt. Last night the temperature was about 10 degrees and I was rolling in snow after our toboggan rides (Mountain Boy Sledworks... also AMAZING!) and I was completely warm and dry. If you want good mobility, great warmth, excellent durability and to keep moisture out at a reasonable cost, this is the item you want!
