5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect work coat/camp coat
I absolutely love this coat. It's tough and wears like iron. I'm 6'1'', 195 lbs and got the large. I wear a 34 1/2 inch sleeve in dress shirts and didn't get the long. It's a great fit. Very roomy and I wear a vest underneath for extra warmth. Sherpa lining is the best for warming up quick. The canvas shell provides great wind deflection and can be waterproofed with...

2.0 out of 5 stars Warm but extremely heavy
This jacket is warm but its extremely heavy to wear around. Plus the styling is average. I still wear it, but in hindsight it wasnt a good buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect work coat/camp coat, March 27, 2010

I absolutely love this coat. It's tough and wears like iron. I'm 6'1'', 195 lbs and got the large. I wear a 34 1/2 inch sleeve in dress shirts and didn't get the long. It's a great fit. Very roomy and I wear a vest underneath for extra warmth. Sherpa lining is the best for warming up quick. The canvas shell provides great wind deflection and can be waterproofed with CampDry sprays or the like.

Loads of pockets - two inside (one zippered, one velcro), two zippered pockets on the chest, two big velcro pockets on the front bottom, and two handwarmer pockets behind those(which - had they lined them would be even better). The sleeves are insulated and lined with polyester - pretty standard. The coat has good heft to it, and the quality and durability are evident the first time you put it on. I like that the zipper- it is the kind with one zipper coming from the bottom and one from the top, so you can make adjustments there if you'd like. The back of the coat comes down a little bit, so it provides some good cover over the seat. The cuffs are ribbed and recessed behind the canvas sleeve, so you don't see them, and they actually make it easier to take the coat off - the sleeves don't grab on to your arm and turn inside out as much. Another feature is that inside is a little cinch around the waist that you can tighten to help keep some of the cold out (since it's not an elastic waist).

I work with horses in Utah and have been using this during the winter for camping, riding, working around the pasture etc. It's the exact coat I was looking for. I was even considering the Filson Tin Cloth Packer - but for the price and features, this thing is really hard to beat. If you layered underneath it, this would work pretty well for very cold conditions (UT gets pretty chilly in the mountains), although you'd probably want to treat the shell first. I'm recommending this to everyone I know.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best coat I've ever purchased, December 23, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I'll start by saying I am a coat aficionado - I have lots of winter coats that I've purchased and others that I've received from my job - this is the best coat I've ever worn for its intended purpose (i.e. being tough and warm) - lots of pockets (two vest zipper pockets on the outside, a velcro pocket on inside left, a zipper pocket on inside right, as well as the two big velcro pockets on the outside lower, and hand warmers behind those! Heavy material and a generous fit - fantastic coat for winter!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Coat, February 11, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I originally bought the sierra jacket version which I thought was too short when I finally got it. Kept the jacket for a loaner. What I really needed this winter was something a little heavier, longer, roomier. This coat covers your backside and crotch, and is a little roomier than the jacket. It's pretty heavy and bulky. Lot's of pockets which comes in very handy. Lately, it's been very cold and windy here in SE VA, high 20s to lower 30s during the day, some snow and ice. This coat keeps me toasty warm, especially if you use the hood. Manufactured in Mexico, it's very well made with quality materials. I'm very happy with it. I would highly recommend this coat for all your cold-weather chores/excursions. The dark brown is a very classy color on this coat, by the way.

4.0 out of 5 stars Chicago Winter Tested, Appalachian Mountains Approved, October 20, 2011

I survived two Chicago winters in this coat, through howling winds, swirling snow, and bone-chilling cold. It stone cold stopped the nastiest wind off the lake and kept me dry, even during last year's blizzard. I usually switched from my shorter duck coat into this one when the temperature dropped below freezing. The hood and waist both have drawstrings to help fight the cold (the waist string traps your body heat since the bottom of the jacket isn't elastic).

The coat includes lots of pocket space. The two Velcro flap pockets in front are huge (big enough for a folded up ball cap), and they have pockets perfect to stick your hands in hidden behind them. It's a good looking coat. In impolite company you'll look like you work for a living, and in polite company you'll never have trouble figuring out which coat is yours at the end of the night.

The duck cloth makes the coat super durable (I've scraped past uncountable branches and thorns without tearing in this coat or my other one), but it also makes it very heavy. Not a problem for normal wear, but carrying it around inside can get old and I've avoided taking it with me on wilderness camping trips.

I only have one real quibble: I have a lot of trouble getting the main zipper started. The zipper on my other duck coat has been no problem so I think it's related to the double slider the zipper for this one has. It's an annoyance at best, but it's downright aggravating when you're rushing out into freezing temperatures and trying to fool with gloves. The only other downside is that I won't get much use out of it south of the Mason-Dixon Line (even open and without the hood up this is a warm dadgum coat).

Warm, comfortable, and Carhartt-tough.

Be aware that this isn't a thin lightweight jacket. It's more of a winter coat.

An excellent jacket. Fits well - according the the Carhartt sizing standard. I'm 6'3", wide shoulders - L-Tall is a good match. Very solid unit - I'd like to see the wind get through this one! Nicely lined and well finished in terms of stitching.
