3.0 out of 5 stars Sizing is all wrong
The jacket seems to be a fine jacket, though I'm not certain because I can't really wear it. I wear a medium in normal people clothes (including in other Carhartt jackets), a large in metrosexual people clothes, and a size 40-42 jacket. So I figured that a medium would fit, especially considering that the product's sizing chart says a 40 is medium.

It doesn't...

I thought this was an over-priced jacket when I first saw it but many people I know who work in construction often rant about how good Carhartt is so I decided to give this one a try.

Keep in mind that I live in CO and temperatures can drop to the single digits, also I own many of those "puffy" jackets. The problem with these "puffy" jackets is that they make me sweat, often I'd be outside shoveling snow or walking and my back and my armpits will start sweating in the middle of 30 degree weather. This is where this jacket accomplishes at what it does best, it let's the extra heat out of the jacket so you won't be sweating buckets in the middle of winter. Sounded like a marketing gimmick at first but I soon found out that it actually does work.

When I first opened it I thought "Whoa! this is too thin to keep anyone warm." True the jacket is pretty thin, but it's actually warmer than most jackets I've owned. Just keep in mind that I wouldn't wear this in 30 degree weather or below. One time the temperature dropped to 8 degrees Fahrenheit and the jacket pretty much disappeared, but keep in mind that Carhartt also has warmer jackets for colder weather. However if you own this one, this can be solved by simply wearing a simple sweater underneath and that will keep you warm.

I've been using this jacket for over a year and it's gotten dirt, snow, rain, paint, you name it. It still works like a miracle. I love it. I bought this jacket for the sole purpose of taking it to work but I like it so much I wear it everywhere now, so I'm planning on buying a new one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blue collar style, February 14, 2009
I've worked outside for just over 20 years. Experienced many types of winter/wet weather clothing. This is a fine item. I and most of my co-workers agree that this is some fine rain gear. The rain pants, although equally expensive, are worth every penny. Comfort, style, durability...you can't go wrong. Seriously.

It doesn't fit, not even close. With my arms at my sides, my fingertips are just barely visible beneath the cuffs, and the velcro adjustment doesn't help much. I look like I'm 12 years old wearing my dad's clothes. These cuffs will end up in my soup, to be sure. I tried typing this review while wearing the jacket and had to stop to hike up the sleeves. No joke.

I haven't worn a small in anything for about 30 years. Maybe I'm shrinking. I'm going to try to exchange this for a small. I read the seller reviews and saw several complaints about the arduous and lengthy return process. I'm not looking forward to this. That said, if the seller actually turns this around quickly, I will edit this review to reflect the service.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not for all day, but comfortable, February 3, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I'm a gardener in Vancouver, where it never stops raining. I wanted a coat that would last and be comfortable in rainy weather. Unfortunately this coat's waterproofing doesn't seem to last very long in rain. The first few days it's totally dry, but after that it allows water to slowly seep through. Frequent washing helps a bit but spinning the coat at high RPM as in a front loader seems to break up the material a bit.

Despite allowing water through, working in temperatures between 3°C and 15°C are comfortable provided that you are wearing enough layers to keep warm and you keep moving. Two or three layers is enough to keep the water from seeping through to your skin, and I stay warm, though slightly damp. However, stopping for lunch and putting the coat back on after 1/2 hr is a chilling experience! I haven't used it in the summer yet, and I may modify this review depending on how it works out long term. It is more comfortable than PVC as it's more flexible and provides more insulation, as well as deteriorating less rapidly (i.e. slow seep vs tear--you can wear it after it starts wearing out).

For the price in Canada, I'd never buy this coat. For the price here, I'd consider buying it again because it's a lot more comfortable than PVC, despite not being waterproof.

Edit: 1 year later

It's not up to the Carhartt name brand and price.

I've been using it for year, and re-waterproofed it several times with TX Direct Spray On by Nikwax but that doesn't seem to be quite as good as the original waterproofing, and wears off after two hours of working in steady rain. I still think it's better than a PVC jacket but it's overpriced. In warmer weather it's too warm. In my case, my shoulders and armpits are moderately damp after 8 hours of use.

This is a well made rugged coat. Sort of a North Face/ Mountain Hardware coat for the farm/ ranch.

Not a summer coat too heavy!!! The next model needs to have pit zips!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very nice!, January 24, 2011
I've owned and worn out a lot of Carhartt stuff in the last 15 years (many pairs of logger jeans and double knee pants, one arctic coat, one barn coat, enough pocket T-shirts to make rags for oil changes through the next century). If you're reading this, you probably already know Carhartt makes great stuff that's reasonably priced for those of us who work for a living. After all, we need clothes to keep us alive while working outside in the winter in Wyoming, not clothes that make us look like the cast of "Jersey Shore."

That said, this is one of the best clothing items I've ever bought, Carthartt or not. It's reasonably priced and performs very well. I wanted a wind and water shell and shopped all over, looking at the stuff from all the big name outdoor gear makers. Money was no object. Problem is those coats and jackets, even in XL and XXL sizes, are made for skinny metrosexual climber guys and they don't offer tall sizes for those of us with sleeve lengths longer than our inseams. It'd be great if we were all built like Matt Damon but that's just not the case. Don't get me wrong, the big names make great quality stuff that's very techy and sexy but they just don't get it done for this 6'2" 260-lb aging middle linebacker who likes to eat and needs to conceal a holstered pistol and spare mags.

I randomly found this coat and figured, hey, it's Carhartt, I've had a lot of Carhartt stuff over the years and it's survived working outside year round on drill rigs in Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana, why not? The price is right (it's China made, sadly) and it does what I need it to do. I called Carhartt and they said it's not windproof, but in my experience so far it's been just dandy for cutting winter winds out here on the high plains. With only a T-shirt and this coat I'm good to go until about freezing (even with the wind, see above) and a fleece jacket or hooded sweatshirt underneath gets it done until about 0. Any colder than that, I'm getting out my other Carhartt arctic coat. I can't speak for the waterproof qualities yet (this is a high desert, technically) but based on the other reviews I'm sure it'll hang.

This coat also looks a lot better than the usual Carhartt stuff, which is important since I have to dress up for work now. I like it so much I'm thinking of getting another one to replace my beater get-around Carhartt coat that gets me eyeballed by security guards at Whole Foods (they think I'm a homeless guy looking to do some dishes in the can I guess) and keeping this one as my good coat for dressing up at work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impressive., January 28, 2010

My days of construction and Working outside are long past and now I'm in a ritzy east-coast grad school. This jacket definitely fits with blue-collar and white collar, and any other type of collar folks you meet. At about 20 degrees, this coat is warm enough to stand still with a dress shirt and an undershirt underneath. At about 30, you'll probably need to half-zip it if you're also wearing a sweater. The waterproofing works perfectly, and as noted by other reviewers the construction of the cuffs is ingenious and comfortable. The only negatives are (1) the jacket is somewhat stiff, and I suppose it will take a while to go away; and (2) the fit seems to be about a half-size too large. If I had a do-over, I'd have got the next smallest size, but its not a big enough problem for me to get worked up about it. Bottom line, this is warmer than any trench coat, pea coat, or hiking jacket I've ever had, at a far lower price, and I anticipate it will last many years longer. I'm a Carhartt convert, and this jacket will make one out of you, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars very good coat!!!, February 7, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
this is excatly what I wanted.

Lightweight, but very strong and durable

and warmer than it looks. i wear it shoveling snow

and on very cold days. i wear it over my suit to work

and it has a middle of the road look between a topcoat and a parka. not too dressy but not to bulky and casual.

i'm very happy with it and recommend it to others.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not up to Carhartt's standards., January 28, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I am generally always happy with anything Carhartt. I did a lot of searching before i found this coat, i followed the sizing chart, but when it arrived i found the sleeves to be much too long, the small amount of velcro around the wrist was not up to carhartt's standards, it was somewhat of a let down after so much time spent looking for just the right coat. I didn't send it back because i needed a rain jacket at that time, so just rolled the sleeves back, (doesn't look good) and wear it in spite of the bad fit. I will also need to figure out a way to make the cuff's right. Sizing chart is a bit off.

Would probably not recommend this coat.
