5.0 out of 5 stars Weston is the best one, February 25, 2008
This review is from: Caribbean Cruise/Music for a Rainy Night (Audio CD)
Paul Weston is really Mr. Easy Listening. But it's not elevator music; it is the very best of its kind: super arrangements with the best of 40s-50s jazzmen playing with an excellent tinge of 40s-50s jazz. Quite superior to Jackie Gleason, Mantavoni, Chacksfield, Stanley Black, and so many others. Weston Americanized his name, arranged for Tommy Dorsey in the 40s, and many of the great vocalists--a magna cum laude in music from Dartmouth. And was married to one of the great singers of the 40s and 50s, Jo Stafford. You can purchase so many of the Columbia and Capitol albums. They are all wonderful. 50svinyl

5.0 out of 5 stars Great early easy jazz from a master of the genre, November 1, 2006
This review is from: Caribbean Cruise/Music for a Rainy Night (Audio CD)
Paul Weston was an early musical director for Capitol records, back in the 1940s..It was a time when crooners and vocal divas ruled the roost,Big Bands were experiencing thier heyday, and some of the very best songs ever to be written were new..Weston,who was married to songstress Jo Stafford, produced numerous hit sides for various entertainers, but these sides are his own early easy listening jazz versions of many song standards..Weston's's work is available on many cds now...When making these albums Weston assembled some of the very best jazz and studio talent, and when one listens these choices are evident...

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, April 3, 2008
This review is from: Caribbean Cruise/Music for a Rainy Night (Audio CD)
Paul Weston is one of the fountainheads of light music. This fine CD contains two albums released by Columbia in 1954. The orchestra plays well and the sound (monaural) is good. This is great music to relax to, although it is by no means simplistic. Weston favors vibrato rich string and brass sounds, which are very much of his era, since we don't hear them very much now. The only reason I'm not giving this album 5 stars is that I feel that most of it is second class work for an arranger as gifted as Weston was. Too many of the tunes feature very easy solutions to the orchestration. They are not as involving as Weston's best work. To hear top notch Weston, I would recommend his Jerome Kern CD, a paragon of light music arranging.
