One-Hit Wonder?,

After hearing Cafe Espana, I bough this CD in anticipation of similar quality of composition and performance throughout. Sadly, no other track comes close to the hypnotic, exotic excellence of Cafe Espana, although some are good. Of course, this is purely subjective, but I've had similar experiences with other collections from either Dave Samuels and Paquito D'Rivera. There often seems to be one track that reels me in, and the rest seem like filler. This CD is good, but not great by any means. If you don't already own the track Cafe Espana, the CD is worth it for that alone.

This CD exposes the listener to the various aspects of caribbean music and is a learning tool to discover what the various cultural influences from around the world have had on caribbean culture, and guess what? This CD is just the tip of the iceberg as far as caribbean music is concerned, because there are many more styles of caribbean music out there just waiting to be discovered.

The playing and recording of this cd are exemplary, but the tunes are unremarkable. It is good background music for social gatherings, if you want people to feel comfortable and enjoy the vibe provided by great players but not be diverted from conversation by tunes that capture their attention.
It is so uninvolving that you can turn it up and no-one will notice. But the peerless musicianship will slowly filter into people's souls and heighten their enjoyment levels.

Back into rhythm and latin soul after a few years of jazzing around. A little too Michael Brecker - Don Grolnick for my latin taste, but Paquito is such a master that we can forgive him the perfect sound. Those where the days of digital take over. Anyway, love the arrangements and passion that Paquito brings to these thankful ears. Not his best but interesting tropical combinations. Not a Manhattan Celebration but a Tico Tico Explosión. Not a hurricane but a good tropical storm...

I was looking for some "theme" music for summer time parties and BBQs. This was a great addition to my collection!

Paquito D'Rivera and Dave Samuels are names that are common among excellence in Latin Jazz performances; this is absolutely a must-have for those music lovers that are looking for some'n fresh, rythmic and with a lot of flavor. You'll love every minute of it !!!!!!
