Excellent read!, January 11, 2011
This review is from: Caribbean Monk Seals: Lost Seals of the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea (Paperback)
John Hairr writes an excellent book on the little known Caribbean monk seal. Told in the classic Coachwhip Publication style with plenty of first person accounts, Hairr's book about this little known seal is a cautionary tale of ignorance and afterthought. Thoroughly researched, this book has lessons directly applicable to the two extant monk seal species and broad implications for conservation of all large vertebrates. Hairr's accounts vividly show the little-known seal to be of recent, living memories, so close to us historically one feels that you should still be able to find them in the wild. Indeed, Hairr chronicles the various attempts at finding living specimens of the declared extinct animal, all of which have failed. Whether your interest is marine mammals, conservation, history, or even cryptozoology, you will enjoy reading this book.
