China. Gr. 3-6. From vegetable chow mein to coconut custard, each book in the World of Recipes series delivers recipes that will introduce young chefs to new tastes. Following a short introduction to the food and the region are a glossary and a general introduction to cooking, including some rules for safety. Then come the recipes, more than a dozen in each book, arranged by difficulty. Each recipe is carefully organized into a series of numbered steps, with unfamiliar words in bold type. Following the recipes are suggestions for further reading on the food and the country; a chart comparing weights and measures; and an explanation of the healthy-eating food pyramid. The accompanying colorful photographs are attractive enough to tempt even young children to try something new. A good selection for school or public libraries wanting to enhance their cookbook collections or add zest to their geography studies. Heather Hepler
