all right, i don't speak spanish, but i think the international language of music gets the point across here. and beauty is beauty even when one doesn't understand the specific sounds..."el estuche" is probably the best song, although the entire album is strong. andrea echeverri's powerful bluesy voice and hector buitrago's thumping techno beat....it's close to perfect. try it. :)

With Rockers like this, who needs Shakira?,
By A Customer
This review is from: Caribe Atomico (Audio CD)
I recently saw this Colombian rock band in Boston promoting their upcoming album Gozo Poderoso. They were fantastic! I had never heard of them before until a cousin of mine, who is a sound engineer for the band (I haven't seen him in years), gave me a call out of the blue saying he would be in town for a day. I went to meet him and stayed for the show. Again, the show was fantastic! This band has everything: talent, showmanship, originality, and chemistry. They have the potential to cross over to the english market and succeed on their merits. In contrast, Shakira, another popular Colombian artist (who openly claims Alanis Morisette as an inspiration) sounds too much like her idol. Los Aterciopelados is a group worth keeping track of.

One of 1999's Best,

First of all let me say that I'm a big fan of Andrea Echeverry. She is the lead singer and guitar player for Aterciopelados. Her voice has tremendous range, from husky sultry notes to high notes that linger for eternity. This is Rocanrol at it's best. This band has been nominated several times for a Grammy, it is just a matter of time before they get their due. Innovative, sultry, tropical, jazzy, bluesy, folksy are just a few words to describe Aterciopeldos new sound. The CD is a little different from their previous CD's but this is where they are at now and they have a good view of the future. Based on tradional rootsy Columbian sensibilities this music is high octane jet fuel full of electronic Caribbean beats. It is hard to describe but the CD is a sort of techno inspired Columbian Rocanrol. The charismatic Andrea teases with her seductive voice throughout. It makes no difference what she is singing about, it is her unique voice that is so delightful. The band is tight and compliments her to the max. Standout tunes are numerous, including the bolero-folksy-jazzy-hip-hop tinged El Estuche, the upbeat Cosmos that starts out slow and builds to a crescendo that rocks, to the hipnotic Doctora Corazon to the sambaesque Manana, it is all good. Another reviewer said this is mood music, it is, it puts you in a great mood. Andrea te amo!!
