Editorial Reviews

ANGE is, no doubt about it, the most popular of the French Progressive rock bands. Its music is based on Christian DECAMPS’s unmistakable and melodramatic voice, his brother Francis’s powerful organ sounds as well as on the development of energetic and intense medieval lines. The line-up invented its own style, both epic and delirious, and that blends madness, emotions and exacerbated feelings. This poetic and typically French rock was noticeable from the band’s beginnings in 1969, and then got more formal on “Caricatures”, their first album issued three years later.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great first album from french prog-masters, November 20, 2006
This review is from: Caricatures (Audio CD)
This five-piece band, originally formed in 1969, released their first album "Caricatures" in 1972. The music presented here gives us a solid statement of what is to come within the next years. The music has been described as dramatic, theatrical progressive rock which is a suitable description. Some might claim that David Decamps' vocals tend to be somewhat to melodramatic. But what the hey, I like it anyway. It suits the music perfectly in my opinion.
This album, together with the following "Le Cimetiere Des Arlequins", offers "a dark and brooding" atmosphere, more so than the later albums. Just check out the opening track "Ce Gens-La" where Davids brother Francis contributes strongly to this with his organ and mellotron.
This album should appeal to those of you who enjoy prog contemporaries like for instance Genesis(w/Peter Gabriel), King Crimson(w/Greg Lake), Van Der Graaf Generator and Beggars Opera a.o. Even though it's easy to draw lines to those mentioned above the music sounds distinctly french, having their own musical heritage as a major influence. The band has also inspired a lot of other french acts, especially Mona Lisa. A great band, but Ange was the one to set the standards.

4.0 out of 5 stars great prog classic, December 1, 2011

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
great prog classic, ange where a very unique outfit back in the 70s and did very well in there home country of france, they where a lot like genesis was with peter gabriel but a bit more theatrical, i thought this album ( there first) in 1972 was a fantastic effort, the best was yet to come with the next three but that is for another review, this edition comes housed in a nice paper sleeve wich replicates the original lp sleeve and the remastering is great, this music now sounds better then it ever did!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! after all these years im very pleased to have this on cd, if you like ange you would probably like another killer french mid 70s prog outfit mona lisa as well as speed limit, all in the same vain as early ange, listen and enjoy!!!!!!!!!
