Book Description

October 18, 2011
"Carine, and her vision of French Vogue, embodies all that the world likes to think of as Parisian style: a sense of chic that's impeccable and sometimes idiosyncratic and which forever lives on a moonlit street as seen through the lens of Helmut Newton."--Anna Wintour        Karl Lagerfeld once said that if you close your eyes and imagine the ideal French woman, it would be Carine Roitfeld. She is a fashion visionary and a muse. Since the start of her career in the early 1990s, through her collaborations with the legendary photographer Mario Testino, Roitfeld has been credited with launching Tom Ford's career at Gucci, as well as turning French Vogue into one of the industry's most worshipped magazines.
This elegant volume is a visual history of Roitfeld's fearless career. A daring instigator, she is known for pushing the limits with her subversive styling ideas. Featuring a selection of 250 magazine tear sheets and covers from pivotal editorial shoots and advertising campaigns, as well as intimate visual ephemera, this book gives an inside view into Roitfeld's creative thought process and sensibility. A must-have for those interested in cutting-edge fashion and femininity, this book will empower women to follow Roitfeld's lead and take risks with their personal style.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Roitfeld’s latest endeavor, Irreverent (Rizzoli), is an aptly titled 368-page album of photographs culled over her 30-year career. Among images from some of her most famous, and most provocative, shoots—including Eva Herzigova posing with a lot of bloody boeuf for The Face in 1997 and last year’s plastic-surgery story with Crystal Renn—are intimate, endearing snapshots of Roitfeld’s partner, Christian Restoin, and their children, Julia and Vladimir. (In Roitfeld’s world, the personal is the professional and vice versa.)" ~Vogue

"...a beautifully presented mix of collaged images, notes, Carine's personal photos..." ~New York Magazine

"As I close it, I’m reminded of a line from Sunset Boulevard: “We gave the world new ways to dream.” That is what Carine has given the world, and what this book will give forever. Cherish it." ~V Magazine

4.0 out of 5 stars A Designer Scrapbook December 12, 2011
Format:Hardcover
IRREVERENT is a strange title for Carine Roitfeld's book. Roitfeld is a legendary stylist and former editor in chief of French Vogue whose reputation is beginning to approach that of Alexander McQueen. Her fashion and style statements are a bit on the edgy side and her willingness to share secrets she has held with some famous names seems to be one of the reasons of the publication of this book. IRREVERENT is a 368-page collection of pages with pasted photographs from her 30-year career, plus personal photographs (one shows her topless, wearing nothing but a black G-string and white pumps) and notes from the likes of Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, and Tom Ford

Carine Roitfeld has stated that she's enjoying her moment in the spotlight: "I worked 20 years ago, and 20 years ago no one was talking about me. I didn't change. Maybe I was at the right moment. But sometimes I say, What is so interesting about me? I am just doing photo shoots. It's not something that extraordinary. I'm not a great artist, I'm not writing books, I'm not a painter, and people in the streets ask me for a picture or a note and I say why? But I think it's better to appreciate it, because maybe it's not forever."

For the reader who relishes Parisian couture and style this book of memorabilia will satisfy. She has been called both a style visionary and the instigator of dramatic change in clothing and body attitudes. For others, this may seem a picture book that is somewhat in the line of vanity press, but that is also Roitfeld's style. Art critic and curator Oliver Zahm and fashionista Alex Wiederin contribute to this book. Grady Harp, December 11

5.0 out of 5 stars Uber Cool and Amazing February 24, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'll admit that this book is on my coffee table, right next to the one the Olson twins did-FYI, this one is bigger. I love Roitfeld (she's the former editor of French Vogue, is there a more amazing job?) and I love her style. To me, she's everything Anna Wintour is not- her style is edgy with lots of eyeliner and sheer fabric and using clothes in different ways from what they were intended. This book is like a personal fashion scrapbook about inspirations and looks that have inspired her from her photoshoots, plus comments from designers and photogs, usually in the form of handwritten notes. THe layout is great-it's a big book and it challenges you from a fashion point of view to come up with your own style and interpretations. Unlike the Olson book, it's not straight interviews with designers but an interview with Roitfeld and there's lots of comments and recollections from Roitfeld about other designers. One caveat-although she's now 'anti-smoking' there are A LOT of models smoking in the book. Great coffee table book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning and breathtaking December 29, 2011
Format:Hardcover
Anyone who can appreciate fashion and what it takes to put together incredible images will be in love with this book as I am. I received it as a present and it took my breath away. To have Carine Roitfeld give her insight in short along with each editorial was amazing. To see the images her and Testino and other photographers have worked together with will go down in iconic history just as Helmut Newton, Avedon, Penn have. The images are wonderful and to see them all collected here with her wonderful insights to each editorial she worked on is brilliant. Cathy Horyn's essay is brilliant as well. Anyone who loves fashion and editorials will love this. Her work is outstanding and her vision is a real gift to fashion and great photography.
