Book Description

October 15, 2001
This comprehensive and readable guide answers the questions commonly asked by parents and carers following a diagnosis of autism, and discusses the challenges that can arise in home life, education and socializing. The authors cover a wide variety of therapies and approaches to autism, providing clear, unbiased information so that families will be able to evaluate different options for themselves. Throughout, the emphasis is on home and family life, and the everyday difficulties encountered by families of autistic children. Caring for a Child with Autism is an informative handbook in association with the National Autistic Society, written for parents with a recently diagnosed autistic child. This is a thorough introduction to autistic spectrum disorders, to be consulted time and time again as new questions arise.

5.0 out of 5 stars A definitive guide, December 10, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Caring for a Child with Autism: A Practical Guide for Parents (Paperback)
Having cared for autistic children, I have come across similar works designed to introduce/assist parents or carers in the past. This is the most accessible and constructive text I've encountered bar none. A fine balance is found between the provision of essential help and guidance to the encouragement of personal development. Despite the amount of information that there is to digest for someone new to the subject, the book's thoughtful layout makes it highly palatable.

With the emphasis not only focusing on the needs of the child but also those with the responsibility of caring, the authors display an acute appreciation for a parent's questions and anxieties. This is further expressed in the style and content of advice and suggestions that they offer. There are many helpful comments/case studies from families with first hand experience, all presented in a clear and concise manner, successfully avoiding the mire of condescension into which a work of this kind can unintentionally fall.

Should your interest be strictly of a scientific nature, you may need to read further. For any parent or carer however, this should be considered a definitive guide.
