New age technobabble and recycled cliches, October 3, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Caring Economy (Paperback)
A handful of interesting points and lots of yawn make this book nothing new. This kind of analysis -- groovy, jargon-filled and most often eithertotally obvious or incredibly naive or at best, dully rehashed from (pick one) George Gilder, Nick Negroponte, Esther Dyson etc etc etc -- will always exist, and someone out there's always gonna buy it, but why not go to those more intelligent (and intelligible) sources instead of trying to digest a reheated dinner? Many of the ''reliable'' sources in the book for statistics include endless streams of PR and marketing companies with a strong bias in getting the media to reprint their data. McGovern should just stick to the (very useful) Internet surveys his company send out every week. But God deliver us from this kind of self-appointed Internet pundit (read the profile. Winning an award in (wait for it) 1996 from the European Union ain't exactly a hot selling point, I should think, judging by the EU's restrictive Internet policies and almost total lack of understanding of the Net to date...). Maybe as the medium matures more people will notice the clothes (eg lack of ) on this particular type of emperor.

Insightful. I have been a subscriber to Gerry's newsletter for years. I have always enjoyed his comments on all things Internet, and this book is a culmination of his philosophy and predictions for our changing communication environment.

This man has a plan!, July 27, 1999

This review is from: Caring Economy (Paperback)
This book was written by a man you really seems to know where we are going as a society / race. I work in I.T. myself and I often feel that no one really knows where we are going to end up, not Lou Gestner, not Bill Gates. Sure these guys know what the technology will be, they are going to sell it to us, but they don't seem to know or care where the technology will leave us as people.
That's what is great about Gerry Mc Govern's book, he is trying to share his vision of how the Internet and related technologies will effect us as human beings.
The book offers a vast array of facts from meticulously researched sources about the way the Internet has developed and is developing. Throughout there is a consistent message: this is a new era, there are new challenges here's how I think we can deal with them.
In case you are wondering, McGovern's basic suggestions for the Digital age is A new age requires new thinking technology doesn't matter - people do. Price isn't event that important - but people are. Your business should look after / care for people - your staff, your customers, the people in your region, the people who visit your website, etc. - that way you will succeed.
He may eventually be proven wrong but at least he sets out a vision. Now that I have a firm idea of where one person thinks we are going I will find it easier to critically evaluate what others are saying, so if just for that alone - this is agreat book.
