Book Description

“Caring for Your Special Needs Dog” offers practical advice and hope on how easy and fulfilling raising a disabled dog can be. Learn real life tips from families that are making it work.

Not a day has gone by when Markey hasn’t owned a dog. Each dog has taught her something valuable and currently her dog Oscar teaches her about raising a special needs dog. Oscar has epilepsy but the Markey family has learned simple around the house ways to help improve his quality of life. Of course, the veterinarian plays a major role in any dog’s care, but owners have a strong place as well.

Markey also covers what worked for her when preparing her dog for the arrival of her daughter. Children can also play an important role in caring for a special needs dog. Learn how you can help your children while helping your dog.
A percentage of the profits go to The Texas A&M Foundation to the benefit of the Neurology Section, Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinarian Medicine.

Natalie C. Markey writes with humor, compassion, and first-hand knowledge about disabled pets. Read her easy to use how-to tips and uplifting pet profiles in this common sense approach to keeping health-challenged pets happy. Parents especially will benefit from the spot-on kids-and-dogs advice, and the fur-kids will wag themselves silly with approval. I am a fan!

5.0 out of 5 stars I miss my dog! May 19, 2011

Format:Kindle Edition
Natalie Markey provides a great source of information for anyone who owns or is considering adopting a special needs dog. As the owner of one of the dogs that is featured in the book I can say that this is a great resource tool for dog owners with special needs dogs or for anyone who may be considering a special needs dog. Veternarians and animal shelters should tell everyone with a special needs dog about this book. They are still wonderful pets!

We have a dog with bad legs, and this book mainly talks about seizures in dogs or stuff like that. Some stuff was informative, some stuff was inspiring, but it wasn't exactly what I was looking for.

Not that this is a bad book. It may help and inspire you.

This is a very informative book about owning and caring for a special needs pet. Natalie C. Markey speaks from experience and knows what it's like to have a dog that needs that extra care. She shows not only the challenges of owning a special needs pet, but also the unconditional love and immense rewards that come from such an experience.

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money September 2, 2011

This book is a good example of an author who knows a little so writes a book that implies she knows a lot. About the best thing I can say is that it is well written. It is not a guide to caring for special needs pets. And don't let the file size fool you- there are pictures, but the book is very, very short.

The author knows about her own pets and writes about a few others. But even her story of her own dog's epilepsy is flawed; she says humans routinely take phenobarbital, which is not true and has not been true for many, many years.

In her chapter on IVDD she explains how her family euthanized two dachshunds that did not recover with surgery and there is no mention at all of carts. I don't know how someone writing a chapter on IVDD missed the thousands of happy animals that use carts and are NOT put to sleep due to a non-fatal injury. She also spells corgis wrong. I don't think she did her research for this book and I certainly could not recommend it to anyone.

I gave it two stars because the writing is good. I think if the author had kept to what she knew and researched any facts she presented this could have been a good book.
