Comprehensive, informative reading.,

This review is from: Caring for Your Aging Parents: When Love Is Not Enough (Paperback)
When I learned that my father would possibly be moving to a skilled care nursing home, I looked around for material regarding caring for the elderly from a Christian perspective. This book was very helpful. The author has personally experienced care-giving for both of her parents. She gives insight from all perspectives such as, health care, siblings, government support, estates, living wills, support groups and taking care of yourself. Each chapter has a Biblical scripture theme. The book would be inspiring and informative to those who are overwelmed with all the issues of taking care of elderly parents. I found the book to especially benefit me since I am the daughter who doesn't live in the same town as my father so the burden of care-giving falls on my sister. This book gave me many ideas on how I can support her. I was so impressed with the information in the book that I purchased the book for my sister.

Helpful information. Supportive when you are in this situation. It is a book that I highlighted abundantly. Gave me hope and assured me that I was in a commonly difficult situation.

Practical, overflowing with emphathy & well written,

I am helping to care for my grandmother and I stumbled upon this book 'by chance'. I am a quarter way through and this looks like a gem of a book.I found the insights and advice consistent with how my gran is responding in her present state of health, her day-to-day needs, and how the family is dealing with the situation (many a times dysfunctionally). It is practical, overflowing with emphathy and speaks from a person who has gone through the process herself - a very accessible book which addresses the needs of both caregivers and aging parents. Despite the book being written some time ago, it challenged my own misguided notions about old people. Certainly very highly recommended for anyone who is going into or are in a situation where they are caring for an aging person. Often, one may reach a place where one is not sure "what to do next". This book will definitely help.

This is an awesome tool if you are in this place in your life or especially if you areconsidering it. I have my mother with us and then suggested it two my three brothers so they would understand what my husband and I are going thru on a regular basis. It also deals with it from a Christian perspective which is what I needed. Thank you so much to the author for caring enough about all of us out here in the world trying to do what God wants us to concerning our elderly parents.

I'm very sorry to say that I didn't get a chance to read this book till after my mother and father passed away! What a help it could have been to me during those years. This book is packed with great information along with many sources of help. One is never prepared for the role reversal that life brings us in the later years. Being your parents caregiver is one of the hardest jobs you will ever be faced with. Read this book before you need it, it will help guide you through the aging process of your parents. Joanne Kanute, Certified Master Life Coach

Deane wrote this book out of her own personal experience for the purpose of inspiration rather than information. While there is some specific, practical advice offered in areas that include health care, siblings, government support, estates, and living wills, the predominate theme throughout the book is one of caring for yourself as a means to be an effective caregiver to your aging parents. Through her own personal situation and the experiences of others she interviewed, she came to recognize that there was a tremendous emotional toll on caregivers struggling to support their aging family members. She discovered that the average person does not want to talk about the issues of aging and death, that they do not understand the demands and stress placed upon caregivers and that they do not know how to care for caregivers. Deane found that the most effective solution to the problem of giving care to the caregiver was found in peer support groups. She understood that the biggest problem a caregiver faces is the feeling of being alone in the struggle. She normalizes for the reader the processes of loss and grief. Her book is a reassurance that caregivers are never alone because they have a God is with them through the valley of shadows, and they have others that are walking that path or have treaded the course before. This book is beneficial for the caregiver and for those who can potentially provide care to caregivers.

When my mother first began having medical issues which I, my dad and siblings needed to deal with, I bought everyone copies of this book. It has been such a "Godsend"! Since then, I continue to buy copies to give to people in similar circumstances. I buy used or "like-new" copies to keep in my Sunday School class's library so that anyone may keep a copy if it is helpful to them. If you feel like you are alone and dealing with unique issues concerning your parents, please pick up a copy of this book. It will definitely help!

Excellent book! I wished I would have known about this book 5 years ago.It does a great job of telling you what to expect in the future and how you can cope with today. I am sure I will return to this book time and time again. Although written from the view of a Christian, its not "preachie". It gives very practical advice. It does give scripture references and the talks about the power of prayer, but I think even non-Christian would benefit from this book. |
