Book Description

Carl Hayden, a Democratic representative from Arizona, characterized himself a "workhorse" as a member of the Congress, while others referred to him as silent, every state's third senator, and the key player in leading Arizona's rapid growth from a sparsely settled, arid frontier territory to a modern urban state. Hayden wrestled with many issues as they confronted Arizona, including the first national reclamation law, which could bring water to he parched Salt River Valley of southern Arizona, Mexican border problems, Indian and grazing lands, immigration, women's rights, civil rights as well as other rising issues. This is a rare book on the American West that effectively sheds light on this period in the nation's history.

...provides a rich basic source of material for a major biography of a major western senator.>>>> (Richard Lowitt Icasals )

Rice's work is most welcome...studies of the region's major congressional figures, men of great power and vision, are rare. Rice has corrected that in terms of Hayden and points the way for further research into the contributions of other men who impacted what continues to be the nation's most quickly developing region. (The Journal Of Arizona History )

...a long needed contribution to the political history of Arizona. Rice's work provides a carefully researched and thoroughly documented account that illuminates, for the first time, Hayden's role in a number of areas. This book belongs in the library of anyone interested in the political history of Arizona. (James D. McBride Icasals )

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid academic biography, July 29, 2007

This review is from: Carl Hayden (Hardcover)
This is a well written biography of Carl Hayden that attempts to cover all aspects of Senator's life and career. Compared to the other commonly available biography of Hayden, Jack L. August's Vision in the Desert: Carl Hayden and Hydropolitics in the American Southwest, this book does not focus on one specific aspect of Hayden's career but instead provides as broad a coverage of Hayden's 57 years in congress as can be expected of a single book.
