Best Version of Pet Sounds,

This review is from: Carl and the Passions "So Tough"/ Pet Sounds (Vinyl)
Do not waste your money on an an original Capitol T-2458. Diehard Beach Boys fans and audiophiles know that this is the best version of the record that exists, period. I have all the main vinyl versions: Capitol T-2458, Capitol DT-2458, Reprise/Brother MS 2197, the Carl and the Passions 2fer (listed here), and the Capitol reissue N-16156. The latter is certainly a gem; I have a mint copy that sounds great, but the vinyl quality is pretty poor compared to the Reprise/Brother pressings and thus does not play as quietly as the former.
I am no audiophile but when I heard this version I almost cried: you get as much instrument separation as you are going to get in mono; beautiful, distinct lows (no muddiness), brilliant highs, and definition: bicycle horns and bells, flutes, and drums sound real and present. In my opinion, this is the only version of the lp that can successfully transport you back into the studio as the Boys et al. were recording this masterpiece. |
